The Nature Bucket: North Cascades – a Landscape
This Bucket covers a road and hiking trip we did last week; Wednesday, October 21, 2026, to be precise. We drove up to Artist Point in the North Cascades on what turned out to be the last week of nice weather before the onset of true fall weather, rain and more rain. For the mountains this means snow, more snow. Turns out that we had perfect timing. Four days later, on Sunday, the road up to Artist Point closed for the winter because of snow.
The Nature Bucket: Caving Ice Caves
Natural wonders abound along the Mountain Loop Highway, a prime entryway into the heart of the North Cascades. About the Mountain Loop Highway: The road is paved for 34 miles coming from Granite Falls traveling along the beautiful South Fork Stillaguamish River. Once reaching Barlow Pass at 34 miles the road becomes gravel for the next 13 miles. Efforts are under way to see if this gravel portions can be paved in the future.
The Nature Bucket: Mushroom Season is Open
Here in western Washington, the end of summer and the start of fall is marked by spiders, spider webs, gentle rains, shorter days, and cooling temperatures. The fall rains motivate the underground fungal mycelium network to send up fruiting bodies … mushrooms! But wait, there’s more. There isn’t much bedrock exposed in the Puget Lowland. The lowlands are mainly mantled with glacial-derived sediments – silt, sand, and gravel.
The Nature Bucket: The Zoo Edition (and bonus birds)
Zebras at the Woodland Park ZooBrownsBay In this Bucket, we visit the Woodland Park Zoo. We were there just this last Saturday for a special closed event: OctoBEARfest. This is what it is: Woodland Park Zoo transforms into your own personal beer garden. Get ready to taste your way through 50 Northwest breweries, cideries, and meaderies. Each ticket purchase supports conservation efforts locally and around the world. And that is exactly what it is.
The Nature Bucket: A Day at Mount Rainier National Park
On clear days, Mount Rainier is in view from nearly anywhere in the Puget Lowland. It’s easy to become blasé about “The Mountain’s” presence and the dangers it could unleash. Uniformitarianism and catastrophism are two opposing historical theories in geology that explain how Earth’s surface and features evolved over time. Uniformitarianism states that Earth was shaped by slow, steady, and continuous processes—such as erosion, weathering, and plate tectonics—over vast expanses of deep time.
The Nature Bucket: Sauk River Revisited
One of our frequent hiking destinations is the Old Sauk Trail just outside the mountain town of Darrington. The trail has a gentle grade that follows the Sauk River through old forest that opens to views of the river. We last hiked this trail on July 1st of this year. This Bucket is plant dense but we observed a couple pretty butterflies to hold your interest.
The Nature Bucket: BrownsBay does Browns Bay
This last June 15th was the lowest tide of the year, a minus 4.1, I believe. I heard it was the lowest tide of the last four years. When that happens, it’s required, by me, that I get down to the water and check things out. We live fairly close to the Puget Sound shoreline, ironically Browns Bay. Now you know. Our neighborhood has access rights to the shoreline. It’s written into our covenants and recorded with the county. Access is through a narrow city easement.
The Nature Bucket: Glass Beach
Glass Beach has been on our list of local places to visit for a long time. We woke up one Saturday morning, May 30th to be exact, and my wife said “Let’s go to Port Townsend today.” So I said, “Let’s finally hike to Glass Beach then and chalk it off our list.” We agreed, and I quoted from the spoof move The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra, when Lattis says “Let us ready the preparations.” And so we did.
The Nature Bucket: May 2026 Nature Recap
This story is a recap of my nature observations during the preceding month of May. My plan going forward is to prepare similar stories every month that will drop on the first Tuesday of each month. The theme for this story is “Close to Home – The Wonders of Nature Just Outside Your Door.” It’s based on a book I just picked up of the same title. I haven’t yet read the book, but the title intrigued me. The nature I will share with you are my observations from mostly around my home.
The Nature Bucket: Monthly Last Tuesday – Mount St. Helens Field Trip
I have set a goal to publish a Nature Bucket on the last Tuesday of the month. This is my commitment to you, the Bucketeers, and to all who visit the Nature Bucket. Our commitment is to keep the Nature Bucket alive and well as we navigate through these uncharted waters. Sure, it’s challenging. And, oh yeah, it’s different. Do we pick up our marbles and walk home? No! I’m drawing inspiration from Bluto’s big speech (caution – some profanity). The Nature Bucket is a shared refuge.

However, due to lack of budget, this project has been put on hold with no guarantee when it will begin.
Eden Park, Eventfinda Stadium push for more live concerts after Taylor Swift NZ tour snub
Eden Park's CEO says his team is "exploring our options" with Auckland council to try and extend the number of concerts they are allowed to put on during a calendar year. Separately, Auckland venue Eventfinda Stadium on the city's North Shore has released research in which it says local residents would welcome more concerts from international acts at the Glenfield venue. It has been refurbished following damage from the Auckland Anniversary Floods in 2023.
The Daily Bucket: King Tide and Other Delights
My town of Edmonds, Washington, sits perched on the eastern shore of Puget Sound, the “Sound” being part of the greater Salish Sea. Across the Sound, in view, is the Kitsap Peninsula. Beyond, the Olympic Mountains form the backdrop. Over the years I’ve watched the tides rise and ebb. Low tide lets me walk the beach for miles, if I choose. High tide limits the amount of beach exposed and the distance one can traverse along the shoreline.
The Daily Bucket: Let's do the Twitch
The atmospheric river had already dropped over 3 inches of rain on southwestern Snohomish County over a span of 48 hours. Streamed directly from the tropics over a thousand miles away like a water cannon aimed directly at the Pacific Northwest. There would be a brief lull on day three and I intended to take full advantage of it. For the last several days, eBird had been reporting a Tropical Kingbird at the Everett Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The Daily Bucket: Silicon Valley Shenanigans - Part III
Thursday, Nov. 30, 2023 Thursday, November 30, 2023 at 2:00:16p GMT Alviso Marina County Park Part II — Ed R. Levin County Park In Part III we come back to the Alviso area (Part I) at the southern margin of San Francisco Bay. We’re at Alviso Marina County Park, where the Guadalupe River enters San Francisco Bay and becomes Alviso Slough, a meandering tidewater channel. THE DAILY BUCKET IS A NATURE REFUGE. WE AMICABLY DISCUSS ANIMALS, WEATHER, CLIMATE, SOIL, PLANTS, WATERS AND NOTE LIFE’S PATTERNS.
The Daily Bucket: Silicon Valley Shenanigans - Part II
Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2023 Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at 2:00:18p GMT Sandy Wool Lake - Ed R. Levin County Park Part II is continuation of my work trip to the Bay Area where I had some free time in my evenings to visit some of the natural areas along the southern shoreline of San Francisco Bay. Part I was a visit to the Alviso Unit of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. This Part II is my quick evening visit to Ed R. Levin County Park as recommended by my local work colleagues.
The Daily Bucket: Silicon Valley Shenanigans - Part I
Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2023 Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at 2:00:10p GMT Setting sun at New Chicago Salt Marsh My work travels have taken me to many parts of the United States. Some of those places are not near the top of my vacation list. But I learned much about each place, especially focusing on the history and the natural world of each of those places. The Bay Area is one place I’ve often traveled to for work.
The Daily Bucket: Low Tide Days on Puget Sound
Just a quick few links in case you want to geek out more on tides and intertidal ecosystems. Tide Intertidal Ecology Salish Sea Marine Species Identification Let’s move on to the fun part … creatures and things. Here’s a couple views of “the Rock.” At super low tide, I go first to the Rock. The Rock and the smaller rocks around it are great places to find intertidal lifeforms. The rocks offer great protection and hiding places.
Labour’s science curriculum a failure in the making
PRESS RELEASE | Erica Stanford MP | 06 July 2023 - Labour’s science curriculum a failure in the making Labour’s new science curriculum will have a detrimental impact on student outcomes and achievement and should be scrapped right now, National’s Education spokesperson Erica Stanford says. “Teachers who have seen Labour’s proposed curriculum have called it ‘embarrassing’ and said that it would lead to ‘appalling declines in student achievement’.
The Daily Bucket: Ice Age Revealed at Barnum Point
There are no birds in this Bucket. If you’re expecting birds here, my apologies. But please do add birds in the comments. This Bucket is about rocks, glaciers, and earth history. No rocks were harmed, though a few small, colorful, wave-polished cobbles found their way back to our house. THE DAILY BUCKET IS A NATURE REFUGE. WE AMICABLY DISCUSS ANIMALS, WEATHER, CLIMATE, SOIL, PLANTS, WATERS AND NOTE LIFE’S PATTERNS.

The Daily Bucket: Tommy Thompson Trail - Anacortes, WA
A couple maps for orientation. The trail begins in a commercial area, then goes through a light industrial area devoted mostly to boat repair and maintenance. This part of the trail has open areas with grass, shrubs, and small trees that make it a good place to find sparrows: Song Sparrows all year, White-crowned mostly in summer, and Golden-crowned in winter. It’s one of the few places where I see House Sparrows. A few hawthorn trees grow along the trail where its berries attract Cedar Waxwings.
Dawn Chorus: The Great Backyard Bird Count
The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC), is a four-day global event that occurs annually each February. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, National Audubon Society, and Birds Canada sponsor it. Think of it as a very small scale version of The Big Year. You birders know what that is. The goal of the GBBC is: For the record, I am not a serious birder. I don’t keep a life list. I barely keep a “to do” list. I use eBird sporadically. But, I’m a little competitive and I like to have fun.
The Daily Bucket: Triple Hotspot Day
I’m getting used to the fact that I can spend a good part of a day looking at birds without the subtle anxiety of work obligations creeping into my brain, or thinking of how I’m going get yard work and home projects completed over a two-day weekend (and still have time for fun things). So, about a week ago, on a weekday, I hit three separate and unique eBird “hotspots,” all within about a 10 or 15 minute drive from home.
The Daily Bucket: Chase Lake Redux
Chase Lake is a pond and wetland area in my town of Edmonds, WA. Chase Lake serves as a stormwater detention pond but also attracts birdlife, especially winter waterfowl. It’s not a big secret spot. It gets regular birding visits from the local birding condescenti from what I see on eBird. When I visit, I’m usually the only one there, which is probably why I like it. I did a Bucket on Chase Lake last April. That Bucket here, Chase Lake and the Uncommon Dandelion, provides a little more background.
The Daily Bucket: Wind, Waves, and High Tide
I don’t get down to the Edmonds Fishing Pier near enough. The morning goes by quickly with my usual routine: feed the dogs, brew an ice mocha (with almond drink), stoke the bird feeders, pour a bowl of cereal (with almond drink), then sit down at the computer looking for the latest Daily Bucket, read some articles, check the weather forecast. Time passes and soon the early morning has evaporated.
The Baily Bucket: Horicon National Wildlife Refuge - Wisconsin
Horicon National Wildlife Refuge - Wisconsin In my work email inbox was this: Subject: vacation in Wisconsin? We just signed a contract for *** — site visits next week Great free beer Four days after that email, I’m on a flight from Seattle to Milwaukee to spend three days looking at rock quarries. This was all just last week. Aside from free beer and looking at rock quarries, I was excited to see Wisconsin, a state I’d never visited before.

The Daily Bucket: Oregon Caves - Day 2 Travelogue
This multi-day Bucket/Travelogue covers a trip to southern Oregon that included a four-day lodge-to-lodge raft-supported hiking trip down the Rogue River. Day 1 here: The Daily Bucket: South to Oregon the Long Way - Day 1 Travelogue Day 2: We arrived safely into Grants Pass the night before (Day 1), checking into the Riverside Inn.
The Daily Bucket: Have you cleaned your nest?
Black-capped Chickadee and Chestnut-backed Chickadee As nesting season is approaching, I made time to clean out our two nest boxes. These two nest boxes have been in use for close to 30 years by chickadees. From the title photo, you can see we have two species of chickadees. The Chestnut-backed Chickadee is the most common around the here by a margin of at least 2 to 1. THE DAILY BUCKET IS A NATURE REFUGE. The Daily Bucket: Edmonds Fishing Pier - Episode 1
That's Mount Baker on the horizon, a dormant volcano This holiday break and a light work load has afforded me a little extra time to get out in my own town. Consider it a warm up for retirement. We had a big dump of snow a few days ago and then a booster shot day before yesterday. The wee hour temperatures were down into the teens. I needed to go into town to pick up a couple items at Ace Hardware. It was a perfect opportunity to make a little side trip to the Edmonds Fishing Pier.

The Daily Bucket: Surviving Massacre Rocks
Shoshone Falls on the Snake River near Twin Falls, Idaho The title of this Bucket sounds more badass than actual reality. The journey was to drive from Twin Falls to Pocatello, about three hours if you throw in pit stops for bathroom breaks and coffee (grande nonfat latte). You can legally go 80 miles per hour on these Idaho interstates. One of the stops I made was at Massacre Rocks State Park, right off Interstate 86. I spent about an hour and half there for a short walk.

The Daily Bucket: Meandering
Crescent Lake is an oxbow lake near the confluence of the Snoqualmie River and Skykomish River. Where these two rivers join, they become the Snohomish River that after short distance empties into the Salish Sea. These rivers where they emerge from the mountains into the lowlands, sway back and forth across wide valleys. They meander. Remnants of these meanders, where they become cut off from the main river, are oxbow lakes. THE DAILY BUCKET IS A NATURE REFUGE.
