Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
I was an MP in the Army and realized this wouldn't help me get a job. So I got myself transferred to Public Information; and that did help.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, for many years but I was never a good typist. Fortunately, word processors came along and then dictation software, which I love.
How is social media changing news?
Not as much as people think. If our leaders and experts tell a lie, how do we blame that on social media? People lie to get power and money.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
I'm sorry but I do not have one. Truth is, all I do is create so I don't have much time for reading what others create.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Journalists are scorned because they became propagandists. I think of myself as an honest scholar. In education, I'm a whistleblower.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
One I'm using now is #drainingtheswamp. That phrase exactly captures what I have been urging for years-- in education.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I am pitching novels, education articles, poetry, and brilliant new ideas in all directions. No one pitches me.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Pages in Mac. Nuance dictation software. Email. Printer. I'm in business.
What's your favorite social network?
I use twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and several others. But I'm not expert.
Who do you wish followed you?
In education, that would be teachers and people in control of our schools. In literary work, that would be editors and publishers.
Why did you become a journalist?
I am a writer, a humanist, and a person with a great bullshit detector. Naturally I crusade against nonsense in education.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No. But I spent the last six months of my Army years in the Public Information Office, so I was a reporter for the Fort Deven newspaper.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
My 400 education articles on the Internet together constitute a story of deception and dishonesty. The experts know their ideas don't work.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
I won't presume to advise on the technical side. Hard work usually pays off. Apparently, smoozing is also important. I was never good at it.
When's the best time to pitch you?
If you want to give me money or glory, any time.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
Sorry, I am pitching all the time but people are rarely pitching to me.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
As I said, I make a lot of pitches but people do not pitch to me. I'm the creator.
What's your favorite drink?
Yuengling beer, traditional lager.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
I'm in my office almost 9 hours straight 6 days a week. So I am most likely to be coming to my office or going home from my office.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
For years, my enthusiastic answer was WIRED. But they recently lost their way. I see the editor was fired. So the bosses agreed with me!
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That the Education Establishment means well but can't get its act together. I say they don't mean well and have got their act together.
