What was your first job as a journalist?
I count my apprenticeship at KABC-TV as my first job in journalism. It was my first real taste of reporting from the field.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
It was an electronic typewriter, with a monochrome screen. Type your document, hit "print" and it types everything out, one letter at a time.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
#gameover #nothingtoseehere – at the end of a live-tweeted police pursuit.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Just pitch me. Personalize it, make sure it's a topic I cover. Be passionate, because if you're not excited about it, I may not be either.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter, for what it offers in varying perspectives/viewpoints on the news – and the immediacy with which we can talk about it.
Why did you become a journalist?
I love to write, teach and inform – but I also have a kind of insatiable appetite for information.
