How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Strong subject lines are king. In the body, around four sentences or less to get the point across works best.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
I use Otter for recording and automatic transcription. It saves a lot of time. That, plus Google Docs to continue from any device.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Just keep writing. The bigger the portfolio, the better.
When's the best time to pitch you?
First thing in the morning, and without the word "press release" in the email to make sure it hits the top of my inbox.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
We got pitched a press release via email for a product that had no tech angle. Then we got an irate call asking why we didn't use it.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
The Cape Argus has some of the best reporting I've seen in SA.
