Many governments have announced big lay-offs. Governments US, UK and EU Have recently announced artificial intelligence (AI) would be directly causing staff cuts. True, we in Papua New Guinea are still trying to get Facebook policing online and a people’s government budget app. We will likely see demand for foreign highly paid/skilled IT specialists. And you? Will AI take my government job? Am I being replaced? About 15%-20% earn government paychecks in the government hinterland.

PART 2 Who watches the police to make sure they are clean? Some police have internal affairs units. Most (until recently) just left it up to the senior officer in charge. The more enterprising communities in the US (for example) have special citizens’ boards – where they take part in deciding on complaints made against a police officer. Many models of holding officers to account exist.

Our police are riddled by corruption. All the data point to this conclusion. Individual officers may do their duty honestly. Generally, honest police may need to take bribes to feed the political machine which employed them. Many of us go to church – where we are told; our mortality depends on us. The Rebel Economist though (with respect to our clergy) holds to a different teaching. We act according to our incentives.
