Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Covering power industry news as an in-house journalist for a mining company.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Absolutely, through primary school I wrote everything with my mum's typewriter - and we just bought my daughter her first typewriter too.

How is social media changing news?

It's making the "citizen journalist" more powerful; but turns out the citizen journalist is an idiot who doesn't care for facts.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Stephen Colbert

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To share information with as many as possible without filtering the facts.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

covfefe

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

If you don't care, I won't care - approach me with some interest and we'll talk.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

As little as possible; Google Docs for drafting, whatever CMS my clients prefer, Gmail or Slack to communicate, and Asana to track tasks.

What's your favorite social network?

That's a bit like asking what's my favorite way of having my fingernails torn out - probably Reddit for how broad it is.

Who do you wish followed you?

I don't particularly care.

Why did you become a journalist?

Because I've always wanted to write, tell stories, and share the interesting facts I discover.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I wish - my school didn't have one.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Writing the Highest Mileage Car In The World - not only was it fun, but it was wildly successful.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

You're the boss of the interview, don't let someone be too dominant and keep pushing for answers. If they refuse, expose it.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Any time works for me.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

Covering a local archery tournament who had never had a single word written about them - they were over the moon that someone cared.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

One of the car dealerships near my town wanted me to come promote their 'sale' on Ford models. No special reason, just.... selling cars.

What's your favorite drink?

Single malt scotch whisky or a good single origin coffee.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Adventuring with my wife and daughter.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

I'll read anything and everything of quality so it's hard to pin it down to one.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

Like most beats you spend a lot of energy and effort ensuring everything is factual and unquestionable.
