What was your first job as a journalist?
The first story I ever wrote was a profile of the women's rugby team for the RU newspaper. The adrenaline of being clueless had me hooked.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
For kicks. Never for work.
How is social media changing news?
Instead of relying on readers coming to us, journalists have to take it upon themselves to bring their work to their readers.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Always email. Don't call me to pitch me on a story, especially if you haven't done the research as to what I cover.
What's your favorite social network?
Instagram. A photo that lets me know what my friends are up to. Very few words. Easy layout. Who needs the rest?
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Guy calls us: "I flew to Syria to fight ISIS." I interview him. He did. Then, he's MIA & I find out he's in prison for a probation violation.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
1) I routinely get pitches from PR professionals telling me about cosmetic products -- a topic I have literally never covered.
What's your favorite drink?
A cold can of Coke or lemon AriZona iced tea. Sarnac root beer.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
1) that the cannabis community is Cheech & Chong, people who don't take it seriously 2) that everybody takes it seriously
