The Lexus RZ's Virtual Shifting Is Fascinating-But It Doesn't Deliver Original
The most frequent criticism of electric vehicles I hear from traditional car enthusiasts isn't the charging times, or the iffy cold-weather performance, or even fears about battery longevity. It's that EVs don't have a "soul." Battery-powered cars aren't made with any passion, these critics say, nor do they offer the sounds and physical sensations that define a truly great gas-powered machine. I take issue with that line of thinking. To me, EVs are just different.
Rivian R2 and Toyota Highlander: Could these SUVs become the EV hits America needs?
Toyota and Rivian, two very different companies, just launched crucial new EVs at a daunting time. Will they succeed? Besides making cars, what do Rivian and Toyota really have in common? I'd say that they share an unfortunate sense of bad timing. It's not their fault, either. But both companies picked a rough year to launch crucial new electric-vehicle products, now that EV tax credits are gone and the U.S. government has largely soured on electrification from a policy perspective.

But both companies picked a rough year to launch crucial new electric-vehicle products, now that EV tax credits are gone and the U.S. government has largely soured on electrification from a policy perspective. That doesn't change the fact that if the Rivian R2 doesn't find buyers, then this promising American EV startup may not have a future.
'A Better Product': What Rivian Learned From The R1 To Make The R2 Original
"The last thing we want," Rivian's design boss Jeff Hammoud told me as we toured the company's California design studio, "is for people to get into an R2 and say, 'this is just a cheaper version of the R1.'" That's the interesting thing about the 2026 Rivian R2. To hit its much-touted eventual $45,000 starting price—about half the cost of a well-equipped dual-motor R1S—Rivian could have simply downsized and stripped out its flagship SUV.
I Drove A Rivian R2 Prototype. It's Going To Surprise People Original
When you buy a Rivian R1S, you’re getting an electric SUV that can do almost anything. The R1S offers superb range, a surprising amount of power and speed, solid off-road capability and software that makes the car better and better over time. The downside is that you also have to pay a lot. If you want a dual-motor R1S with decent range and equipment, you’re looking at spending about $85,000 and up. A loaded version will put you over $100,000.
Tesla's Door Handles Went Global. Now China Is Cracking Down Original
One thing I have learned from covering electric vehicles for years is that not everything on your car needs to be reinvented in some supposedly futuristic way. Call me old-fashioned, but I still like having some physical buttons instead of every control being routed through a big screen. And those electronic charging port doors? Come on. A little flap works just fine. There's no need to add unnecessary failure points.
I Drove The 2026 Polestar 4. It May Be America's Weirdest EV Original
At the risk of sounding biased, I’ve always been rooting for Polestar. The brand made one of the earliest credible Tesla challengers with the Polestar 2, an electric sport sedan that remains an InsideEVs reader favorite—and has been known to win over gas-car fans, too. For a minute, it seemed like the Volvo spinoff was really onto something. Problem is, Polestar took too long to capitalize on that early success.
Tesla's latest approach isn't working
Tesla's new cheap variants fail to lift its fortunes in Europe. Plus: Is Ford really teaming up with Xiaomi? If youre an electric-vehicle enthusiast in the United States, you cant help but be a bit jealous of Europe right now. Increased competition from China has forced the European automakers to get better and better, and now, buyers have more and better choices than theyve ever had. Its little wonder why EVs outsold gas cars in Europe in December for the first time.
China Just Banned One Of The Most Controversial Car Features Ever Original
China has officially banned hidden and concealed car door handles on electric vehicles in a world-first safety policy. The regulation takes effect Jan. 1, 2027, with a grace period until 2029 for models already approved. EVs and other cars sold there will soon require exterior and interior handles with mechanical releases to improve emergency access. The move impacts many EVs popular in China, including Tesla, but will likely affect global automotive safety standards.

The Tesla Model S Is Dead. Here's Why It Mattered Original
Car models get canceled all of the time, even the iconic and successful ones. But for electric-vehicle fans, it's not hard to have mixed feelings about the demise of the Tesla Model S. (And, to a lesser extent, the Model X.) Tesla CEO announced the death of both models on a fourth-quarter earnings call this week as the automaker attempts to become much more than just an automaker—the EVs' production lines will be used instead to make the Optimus robot.
Tesla just killed the most important car of the 21st century
Before Elon Musk, most electric vehicles seemed less like an alternative to gasoline than an argument in its favor. The sad state of affairs for EVs for many years was that they were slow, impractical, and largely enticing only if you lived with copious guilt over your carbon emissions. Then Tesla came out with the Tesla Model S. The speedy, high-tech sedan didnt just leave other EVs in the dust; it could compete with the likes of BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

How General Motors Is Turning Software And Subscriptions Into A Money Machine Original
General Motors announced $5.4 billion in revenue from OnStar and Super Cruise in 2025. The Detroit automaker ended 2025 with more than 620,000 Super Cruise subscribers, an 80% increase from 2024. At the same time, Super Cruise only drove about $234 million in revenue by the end of 2025. General Motors' headline to investors today is that it weathered uneven electric-vehicle demand, regulatory whiplash, and a challenging tariff environment better than most automakers did in 2025.
2026 Toyota RAV4 PHEV Review: Does A Plug Make America's Best-Selling SUV Better? Original
Plug-in hybrids are like communism: great in theory, but often lacking in real-world execution. A car that can run on electricity for nearly all of most Americans' daily driving—about 30 to 40 miles—but still has a gas engine for longer trips seems like it should be the ultimate do-everything vehicle. In reality, however, it's highly debatable whether owners actually plug them in.
Michigan is suing oil companies for 'suppressing' EVs
The state alleges that BP, Chevron, Exxon and others have acted as a "cartel" that's "suppressed innovation" around EVs. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel filed a federal antitrust lawsuit accusing major oil companies and an industry group of colluding to "suppress" renewable energy and electric vehicle competition. The suit names BP, Chevron, Exxon, Shell, and the American Petroleum Institute, alleging they acted like a cartel to restrain trade and block clean energy alternatives.
The Case For Plug-In Hybrids Is Changing. Here’s What Happened Original
A lot of electric-vehicle advocates aren't big fans of hybrids. Many of them would say the sooner the world can go all-zero emissions, the better off we’ll all be, and that hybrids risk prolonging our collective dependence on fossil fuels. As for me, I’m generally pro-hybrid: I say don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good, and if buyers want electrified power, less gas use and fewer emissions, they should go for it.

Chinese carmakers are closing in on America
Two decades ago, a California company called Tesla Motors almost single-handedly created the electric vehicle as we now know it. Elon Musks company has dominated the industry across the globe ever since. But last year, for the first time in a long time, the worlds biggest seller of EVs wasnt Tesla. It was the Chinese auto giant BYD.The secret to BYDs success is simple: The company makes high-tech electric and hybrid cars and sells them at incredible prices.
What Every EV Driver Should Know Before A Major Winter Storm Hits Original
For all their many strengths—including better performance, zero emissions, no drivetrain maintenance and the ability to charge at home—electric vehicles come with some unique tradeoffs when temperatures drop. Granted, gas-powered cars don't exactly thrive in freezing temperatures, either. Engines can struggle to start, 12-volt battery performance suffers and fuel economy can drop significantly.
The Firewall Against Chinese Cars Is Cracking

How Ford will use F1 to build better hybrids: CEO
'It's tech transfer,' Ford CEO Jim Farley said about the company's F1 powertrain deal. But not for gas engines. The automotive industry is full of people who are passionate about motorsports. But at the end of the day, companies like Audi, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, and Ford aren't in a sport as expensive as Formula 1 just for love of the game. The real goal is to get the fans so loyal and so excited that they watch a team win on Sunday, then go to the car dealership on Monday.
2027 Chevy Bolt Production Will End Next Year As Plant Shifts To Gas Original
The heavily updated 2027 Chevrolet Bolt was said to be "limited-production." Now we know just how limited. General Motors officials told Bloomberg the Bolt will only be made at its Kansas factory for about 18 months. In its place will come the gas-powered Buick Envision, which is being reshored to the U.S. from China. A few years ago, General Motors ended production of the affordable Chevrolet Bolt, then immediately lamented doing so as it left a big hole in its electric lineup.
