1 Introduction Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the primary building block for all carbon-based materials in nature. Its fixation and transformation into sugars in the so-called Calvin cycle is enabled by a myriad of enzymes and cofactors that are operating in a concerted fashion [1]. One of the key players in this process is nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH). This organic cofactor can reduce intermediates of the Calvin cycle via 2e−/H+ (i.e., hydride) transfer.
