I was disheartened by how few voted in our latest election. People complain about how things are run, but don’t vote. And, I have been attending recent Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors meetings because of an important issue in our North Lake area. Some of our supervisors are professional and make informed decisions based on facts and law, and some are making decisions based on their emotions.

Benton County saw a 28.2% decrease in the number of residents relying on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) since 2015, according to Iowa's Department of Human Services. Data shows that there were 1,552 people relying on food stamps in 2024, in comparison to 2,162 in 2015. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides monthly benefits to help low-income households buy food. The program is federally funded and administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The role of uncertainty in estimating lead/lag relationships in marine sedimentary archives: A case study from the tropical Pacific
Understanding the mechanisms behind any changes in the climate system often requires establishing the timing of events imprinted on the geological record. However, these proxy records are prone to large uncertainties, which may preclude meaningful conclusions about the relative timing of events. In this study, we put forth a framework to estimate the uncertainty in phase relationships inferred from marine sedimentary records.
