TIMELINE MAPPING CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE: A QUALITATIVE STUDY OF PARENTAL AND CLINICAL CARE PROVIDER EXPERIENCES
Families of children with CHD experience stress as they navigate learning about and managing their child’s condition. The journey from diagnosis to adulthood is challenging for parents, who juggle managing finances, travelling for care, and the emotional burden of caregiving. Parents are encouraged to introduce physical activity (PA) to their children, as it is associated with improved cardio-metabolic health and is a prognostic tool for clinicians.
THE FEASIBILITY OF A VIRTUAL PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COUNSELLING INTERVENTION IN CHILDREN WITH CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE
While long-term survival has improved significantly in recent years, we are now recognizing the high prevalence of cardiovascular (CV) risk factors in children with repaired congenital heart disease (CHD). Low levels of physical activity (PA) are one of the important modifiable CV risk factors. Evidence-based interventions for this high-risk group are needed, as it is not known how to best help children with CHD to be more active.
CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE DISCORDANT TWIN PAIRS DIFFER IN QUALITY OF LIFE, BUT NOT PHYSICAL ACTIVITY LEVELS: A MIXED METHODS STUDY
One in 100 children is born with congenital heart disease (CHD). With improved survival most live into adulthood, but they are at increased risk for secondary health complications, and report lower quality of life (QoL) compared to heart-healthy peers. Physical activity can mitigate increased health risk, and may positively influence QoL. Many factors (environmental, sociocultural, and genetic) impact health, QoL, and physical activity in these children, in addition to CHD.
Increasing threat of coastal groundwater hazards from sea-level rise in California
Abstract Projected sea-level rise will raise coastal water tables, resulting in groundwater hazards that threaten shallow infrastructure and coastal ecosystem resilience. Here we model a range of sea-level rise scenarios to assess the responses of water tables across the diverse topography and climates of the California coast.
ASSOCIATIONS BETWEEN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND AORTIC STIFFNESS IN CHILDREN WITH CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE
To view the full text, please login as a subscribed user or purchase a subscription. Click here to view the full text on ScienceDirect. Aortic stiffness is an important marker of cardiovascular risk. Physical activity is an important determinant of optimal vascular health in children. In children with congenital heart disease (CHD), we know little about the interaction between physical activity and aortic stiffness in different forms of CHD.
EARLY DETECTION OF CORONARY ARTERY THICKENING IN PEDIATRIC HEART TRANSPLANT RECIPIENTS USING OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY

FiguresCardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV) is the leading cause of graft failure and mortality in pediatric heart transplant recipients, characterized by diffuse and concentric coronary intimal thickening. CAV is most successfully treated at mild stages.
EXECUTIVE FUNCTION IS RELATED TO QUALITY OF LIFE BUT NOT PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN CHILDREN WITH CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE
To view the full text, please login as a subscribed user or purchase a subscription. Click here to view the full text on ScienceDirect. Children with congenital heart disease (CHD) are at increased risk of secondary health complications, including neurological deficits. Dysfunction in higher order thinking, such as executive function - cognitive skills responsible for tasks like planning, organization, and self-regulation - have been observed.
PARENTAL, PERSONAL AND MEDICAL CORRELATES OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY LEVELS IN ADOLESCENTS WITH CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE
To view the full text, please login as a subscribed user or purchase a subscription. Click here to view the full text on ScienceDirect. Physical activity is important to optimise health outcomes in children growing up with cardiovascular disease. Understanding barriers and facilitators for participation is important, but the interplay of parental, personal and medical factors has not been well-characterised.
WEARABLE ACTIVITY TRACKERS PROVIDE VALUABLE INSIGHT INTO SEASONAL AND SCHOOL-RELATED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY PATTERNS IN CHILDREN WITH CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE - Canadian Journal of Cardiology
To view the full text, please login as a subscribed user or purchase a subscription. Click here to view the full text on ScienceDirect. Objective evaluation of physical activity levels in children with congenital heart disease (CHD) is of increasing interest in the clinical context. Wearable activity trackers have recently been validated in children with CHD. We aimed to illustrate their value to gain insight into activity patterns in children with CHD.
PULMONARY ARTERY WALL THICKNESS IN CHILDREN WITH FONTAN PHYSIOLOGY - AN OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY CASE CONTROL STUDY
To view the full text, please login as a subscribed user or purchase a subscription. Click here to view the full text on ScienceDirect. Fontan failure in patients with preserved ventricular function is not well understood. Loss of pulsatile flow in the pulmonary arteries leads to lack of shear stress, which is believed to result in endothelial dysfunction. This endothelial dysfunction may further promote vascular remodelling.
OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY IN CHILDREN: DEVELOPMENT OF A PROTOCOL FOR THE STANDARDIZED QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS OF CORONARY ARTERIES
To view the full text, please login as a subscribed user or purchase a subscription. Click here to view the full text on ScienceDirect. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a high-resolution intravascular imaging technique that has shown promise for the early detection of intimal thickening of coronary arteries in pediatric heart transplant recipients.
IN CHILDREN WITH FONTAN PHYSIOLOGY, LIVER STIFFNESS IS CORRELATED WITH AGE, TIME SINCE FONTAN COMPLETION AND BIOCHEMICAL MARKERS OF LIVER DISEASE
To view the full text, please login as a subscribed user or purchase a subscription. Click here to view the full text on ScienceDirect. Liver disease is of growing concern in children and young adults with Fontan physiology. The natural history of liver disease is this patient population is not presently well defined, largely because a definitive diagnosis is reliant on invasive liver biopsy. Non-invasive investigations to detect liver pathology in Fontan patients have not yet been validated.
The Role of Uplift and Erosion in the Persistence of Saline Groundwater in the Shallow Subsurface
In many regions of the world, the shallow (<300?m) subsurface is replenished with meteoric recharge within a few centuries or millennia, but in some regions saline groundwater persists despite abundant rainfall. Analyses of the flushing rate of shallow groundwater usually consider the permeability and recharge rate, and a static landscape. The influence of landscape evolution can become important over millions of years, however.
