Prysmian seeks assurances before building Somerset plant
THE PRYSMIAN GROUP says it wants to push ahead with plans to open a manufacturing facility at Brayton Point in Somerset to serve the emerging offshore wind industry, but it wants assurances before doing so. "To invest, Prysmian needs certainty that future Massachusetts projects will utilize local assets such as in-state manufacturing," said Hakan Ozmen, an executive vice president of the company, in a filing with state officials.
The dirty truth of Northfield Mountain's 'clean' energy
ON FEBRUARY 11, CommonWealth published a commentary by FirstLight Power CEO Alicia Barton bragging of the Christmas Eve grid-rescuing heroics of her company's Northfield Mountain Pumped Storage Station. She went on to describe Northfield as a "zero-emissions" power plant that helped save New England from a natural gas energy squeeze. There were holes in her contentions, and she failed to mention all the other elephants in the room.
Pulling the plug on water shut-offs
FOR MANY OF us, the first thing we do in the morning is turn on the water. We turn on the water to brush our teeth, to take a shower, or maybe make our much-needed coffee. We turn on our water without hesitation because we assume it will always be there. However, for millions across America, the fear of having their water shut off is a harsh reality. As the cost of water rises, little information is available about the impacts of utility policies, such as shut-offs, on vulnerable communities.
Senate leader calls for banning Avangrid from future projects
THE SENATE'S top budget official is calling for Avangrid to be banned from bidding on any future projects in the state if it terminates its current offshore wind contract. Avangrid agreed to the terms of a 20-year power purchase agreement last year and just before it won final regulatory approval the company stepped forward to say the economy had shifted and it needed more money to make the contract to build Commonwealth Wind work.
The curious state of Massachusetts' rent control debate
WHILE CERTAIN FACTIONS of the Boston City Council appear to be coming around in support of Mayor Michelle Wu's proposed middle-of-the road rent control home rule, stakeholders outside the chamber may not so easily come together. On The Codcast , Greg Vasil, CEO of the Greater Boston Real Estate Board, and freshman Boston Rep. Sam Montaño agree the city has a problem with rising rents, but disagreed on how to deal with it.

SJC to weigh wrongful death restrictions in cigarette suits
After years of long-term cigarette addiction, a loved one is diagnosed with cancer. Years of chemotherapy, surgeries, attempts at quitting and relapses, and bone-deep exhaustion follow. Meanwhile, the statute of limitations to bring a personal injury lawsuit against the tobacco company ticks down, then passes. Eventually, the patient does, too.
Fair share for the fossil fuel industry
RIGHT NOW, the fossil fuel industry is booming. A recent Reuters report said that Exxon Mobil made record annual profits in 2022, raking in $55.7 billion, exceeding its previous record of $45.2 billion in 2008. In 2018, the top 200 oil, gas, and mining companies had a combined revenue of $8 trillion - more than double Canada's GDP. And those same companies are sitting on $20 trillion worth of untapped reserves. The Paris Agreement's emissions reduction targets haven't come to fruition.
Rural schools struggle with finances, transportation
WHEN SCHOOL OFFICIALS in the Ashburnham Westminster Regional School District think about what language classes to offer, the discussion is not around what students are interested in or what would be most beneficial. " It's more about what teacher with what qualification can we get," said Todd Stewart, the district's superintendent. When it comes to teacher recruitment, Stewart said, the deck feels stacked against the small district in north-central Massachusetts, 30 miles north of Worcester.

Walking the hope tightrope
THE FOSSIL FUEL industry thrives on climate change messaging and, so far, they're winning For many Americans, Fourth of July weekend is the summer kickoff. Some of my best childhood memories of barbecues and pool parties often entailed long road trips. No social media to scroll through on a family car ride, no depressing newsfeeds, just the relaxing distraction of wondrous landscapes, wildlife, and the road ahead. It was a magical, blissful era frozen in time.
She recorded her abuser, then she faced charges
THE WOMAN'S HUSBAND pushed her down on her bed and placed a pillow over her face. He threatened her and the couple's young child, according to court findings granting the woman a restraining order. The woman, who lives on the South Shore, recorded her husband without his consent, taping phone conversations and conversations inside their home using an app on her phone. She says, according to court documents, that it was an attempt to protect herself and her child from his aggression.
It’s now or never on addressing climate crisis - CommonWealth Magazine
FOR MOST OF US, September signals the end of summer and a time to reflect and reset. This year’s need to reboot is historic as President Biden justifiably declared September “National Preparedness Month” to respond to unprecedented climate events. Biden’s move, while applaudable, is long overdue; I am haunted by how climate change dominates every conversation, not just at backyard barbecue chats.
