1 Introduction The interaction between lattice and electronic degrees of freedom plays the most important role in solids and is particularly pronounced in van der Waals (vdW) materials. Since their discovery, the distinctive weakly coupled layered structures of vdW crystals have been closely linked to a variety of emergent electronic phenomena, highlighting the importance of lattice-electron coupling in these systems.
