1 INTRODUCTION Alkali or alkaline earth aluminosilicate glass structures have been widely debated since the late 1950s.1-5 The structure within metaluminous compositions is well understood (i.e., compositions in which there are higher alkali and/or alkaline earth oxide concentrations than Al2O3).4, 5 For these compositions, alkali or alkaline earth ions, classified as ‘modifiers’, charge balance the negatively charged [AlO4/2]− structural units.
