STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS OF THIS STUDY This study uses a large nationally representative sample of older adults followed up over a 14-year period. The inclusion of blood analytes and covariate data sets the current study apart from most evidence in the research area. Longitudinal attrition reduces the sample size by more than half over the period of study. The analysis is limited by a subjective measurement of physical activity that does not stipulate a time duration for activities.
