What was your first job as a journalist?
I was a freelancer, stringing for Christian Science Monitor and other publications during the brutal war in Sierra Leone.

Yes.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Clark Kent.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Obituaries. Covering the invasion of Iraq in 2003, I ran into a Navy captain who recalled my byline from her father's obit and thanked me.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Our industry faces many challenges. Journalism might disappear, but I'm not convinced that journalists will go. So keep at it.
When's the best time to pitch you?
I'm pitched 24/7. Give me a ring!
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
Any pitch that involves freebies for veterans on Nov. 11 bugs me. There are plenty of vets in need every other day of the year.
What's your favorite drink?
Iced tea. Unsweetened.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
On a battlefield, a stash house or another place equally undesirable to most folks.
