I Hated Her—then I learned to Love Myself. | elephant journal
“I Hate You!” I did—I hated her so much. I learned to hate her more every day. I hated how she valued approval over self-worth and how she let other people treat her. I hated that she put up with that sh*t and never spoke up to defend herself. How she only believed what they told her about herself. I hated how she saw her image distorted and flawed. The guilt and shame that she carried for others and for herself. How she tortured and loathed herself and her life more with each passing day.

'The 100' Timeline Explained: From the Apocalypse to... the Other Apocalypse
The 100 began its story by sending 100 teens from space down to the Earth on what was presumed to be a death mission. Was the Earth survivable or not? With the belief that the survival of the human race was on the line, the risk was determined to be worth it. These teens were Delinquents after all and destined to die anyway. Instead it was revealed over the 6-plus seasons that they weren’t the last humans at all.
The 100 Interview: Shannon Kook Teases Jordan's "Not Going to Bend a Knee"
Interview with Shannon Kook of The CW television series The 100 about the episode "The Old Man and the Anomaly" The situation on Sanctum has gotten trickier now that Bellamy figured out that Clarke isn’t gone, but is alive somewhere within her body with Josephine. On tonight’s episode of The 100 “The Old Man and the Anomaly,” the team makes a decision about how to move forward and not all will agree on the best path forward.
‘Colony’ Season 3: Josh Holloway and Sarah Wayne Callies on Family, the Resistance, & the Gauntlet
Colony Season 3 begins months after the events of last season’s finale, when the Bowman family and Snyder (Peter Jacobson) escaped Los Angeles with the Gauntlet. After months of living in the wild, Will (Josh Holloway) and Katie (Sarah Wayne Callies) leave their place of relative safety to search out The Resistance with Snyder in tow. Last fall, I visited Colony’s Resistance set in the remote woods of Coquitlam, BC with a group of journalists.
The Magicians Muntjac Explained: About That Magical Ship
We Visited the Set of ‘The Magicians’ and Got the Skinny on the Magical Muntjac Ship by Carla Day January 17, 2018 The Magicians is back for Season 3, but its world is without magic. How is a show about magicians supposed to be interesting if there’s no magic? Well, maybe there’s still a little magic around. Outside of the glimmer of magic left within Julia (Stella Maeve), the magicians are left without their power, but there are other natural sources which still exist.
The Flash Season 4 Episode 9 Recap: Don't Run
After last week’s epic, action-packed DCTV crossover, The Flash midseason finale was a slow, slow burn to a mind-blowing twist in “Don’t Run.” While there were many coincidences, sometimes it’s difficult to know if it’s just a matter of a lot of convenience occurrences or if there’s something greater going on. In this case, it was a perfect game of Chess. The pieces were moved according to plan. Before chaos ensured, Team Flash was able to have a little fun.
The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow Recap: "Crisis on Earth-X" Parts 3 & 4
After the first half of the “Crisis on Earth-X” crossover event, the battle between Team Superheroes of Earth-1 and the Nazis of Earth-X was not in the good guys favor at all. Dark Arrow, Overgirl and Dark Flash had their adversaries locked up on Earth-X or in Star Labs and Supergirl in their hands to take her heart to save the evil Kara. This was the darkest The Flash episode that I can remember both figuratively and literally.
The Flash Season 4 Episode 7: "Therefore I Am"
Was it opposite day on The Flash ? “Therefore I Am” felt very off tone for the show and almost like an alternative reality for most of the hour. Instead of the fun, positive, joke-filled The Flash, it was dour and gloomy. The shift suited The Thinker’s origin story, but wasn’t all that enjoyable to watch. The battle between the Fastest Man alive and Fastest Mind while-he’s-still-alive has officially begun.
The Flash Season 4 Episode 6 Recap: "When Harry Met Harry"
What was that? The Flash Season 4 Episode 6, “When Harry Met Harry,” was jam-packed with crazy in both of the main storylines. I’m not sure which one left more jaws on the ground. Was it the mad Council of Wells? Or, Barry, Ralph, and the meta-controlled killer stone cat, caveman, and dinosaur? This season of The Flash has been lighter, funnier, and much more enjoyable to watch than it was last season, but the writers pushed it a little too far this week.
The Flash Season 4 Episode 4 Recap: Elongated Journey Into Night
After a couple of laugh-heavy episodes, The Flash shifted tone somewhat in “Elongated Journey Into the Night.” While there were funny lines and moments, the overall tone was more serious with the introduction of Ralph Dibny (Hartley Sawyer), aka the Elongated Man, and Gypsy’s father, Breacher (Danny Trejo). This hour was a launching pad for a new path of discovery regarding the new metahumans and Team Flash’s foes.
The Flash Season 4 Episode 3 Recap: "Luck Be a Lady"
Who knew bad luck could be so funny? The Flash writers took bad karma and put Team Flash and Central City in many unfortunate situations on “Luck Be a Lady,” when one of the mysterious new metas, Hazard (a.k.a. Becky), turned her luck around at the expense of those around her. The Flash began with The Thinker narrating Becky’s life prior to her becoming a Meta up until the moment she was hit with dark matter.
The Flash Season 4 Episode 2 Recap: "Mixed Signals"
The Flash is back to form! After a rather dark season last year, the fun, laugh-inducing CW superhero show has returned to what we first fell in love with. The first couple seasons of the series offered levity and heart that contrasted the dark, more violent companion series, Arrow, and that distinction was sorely missed. In “Mixed Signals,” The Flash found its spirit again in its characters, their relationships and humor. Post-Speed Force Barry is a blast.
The Flash Season 4 Episode 1 Recap: "The Flash Reborn"
Coming off its darkest season yet, The Flash Season 4 opened with Barry gone and his team working to protect Central City while a little of that darkness remained. Things went crazy, but the story came out the other side with “The Flash Reborn.” Six months after Barry’s departure, Team Vibe (or if you prefer Team Kid Flash — that is a bit long and clumsy though) was doing its best to keep Central City safe, but their Meta capture rate suffered without The Flash.
The 100 Season 4 Finale Explained: What Happens Next?
The 100 Season 4 was a contest between the survival of humanity versus the coming radiation Death Wave. In the finale, “Praimfaya” arrived to change the Earth forever, yet humanity can claim victory, because despite conflict and technological challenges, the human race wasn’t annihilated. Its chance of continued existence though remains a mystery, as Clarke and another Nightblood, Maddie, are the only known survivors six years and seven days after the second wave of Praimfaya hit Earth.
The Flash Season 3 Finale Recap: "Finish Line"
From “Flashpoint” to “Finish Line,” The Flash Season 3 took its hero, Barry Allen, through various emotional states after deciding to save his mother at the end of last season. The highs and lows ended with the ultimate sacrifice– Barry gave up his life for his mistake. The recurring theme of this season has been Barry’s poor judgement and willingness to continually mess around with time and the speed force.
The Flash Recap: "Infantino Street" -- Now What?
Most of The Flash Season 3 has revolved around Team Flash’s quest to keep Savitar from killing Iris. That fateful night arrived on the penultimate episode, “Infantino Street.” Would they be able to find a way to keep Iris safe? Over the last few episodes, the truth about Savitar’s creation and identity were revealed which provided parameters that should have helped save Iris’ life.
The Flash Recap: "Cause and Effect" - No Laughing Matter
The Flash writers missed the mark on “Cause and Effect.” Last week’s weighty and troublesome reveal that Savitar is a future Barry unveiled far-reaching emotional and actual consequences. Instead of following that up with turmoil and serious action, the show took a humorous direction with a fumbling, memoryless Barry. In principle, the idea of taking Barry’s memories in order to disrupt Savitar’s plans was a brilliant one. It was the execution that was problematic.
The 100 : Why the Deaths in "Die All, Die Merrily" Made Sense
Well, that just happened. Have you recovered from tonight’s bloodbath on The 100? If you haven’t watched “Die All, Die Merrily,” please turn away and return after you have watched this brutal hour. Major spoilers follow! The 100 has a history of building up to a major event or death and not taking the usual TV route of a last-minute save. The culling happened on the Ark. Finn (Thomas McDonell) was killed. Clarke (Eliza Taylor) massacred all the Mountain Men.
The Flash Recap: "I Know Who You Are" - Savitar Revealed
Well, The Flash has finally revealed Savitar’s identity … Surprised? Disappointed? Confused? Excited? After nearly a season of anticipation, the ultimate reveal of Savitar’s identity turned out to be anti-climatic after the truth was overtly foreshadowed during the last half of “I Know Who You Are.” Savitar is Barry. This truth explains why Savitar was able to outplay Barry and Team Flash at every turn, but this revelation brings with it quite a few new questions.
The Flash Recap: "The Once and Future Flash"
In order to save Iris, Barry decided to mess with time once again, and headed to the future for answers on this week’s The Flash. All he wanted was for Future Barry to reveal Savitar’s identity, but what he got was something very different. Disclosure time: I fully expected to hate “The Once and Future Flash.” All season long, Barry has made things worse when he travels through time. Why would an adventure to the future be any different?
The Flash Recap: Abra Kadabra - The Cost of Freedom
The quest to save Iris continued on The Flash when a mass-murdering villain, Abra Kadabra, showed up in Central City from the future with knowledge of Savitar’s true identity. With that knowledge, Team Flash could have gained the leverage they needed in order to stop the speedster from killing Iris, but was the cost too high?
The Flash / Supergirl Crossover Recap: "Duet"
The Flash hit the crescendo of its season in the musical crossover with Supergirl, “Duet.” All the time travel shenanigans were left behind and instead we saw actors we love shine as talented singers. It’s always a risky proposition when a series does a themed episode, but The Flash was as perfect as possible in its execution of its first musical. It hit all the high notes with laughs, heart, love, and tears. The song selections were spot on for the scenes and for the actors singing them.
The Flash Recap: "Into the Speed Force" - Show Me a Hero
The Flash started Season 3 with Flashpoint, and now Barry’s time altering snafu has come back to haunt not only him and Team Flash, but especially Wally, who’s being tortured in the Speed Force. Unwilling to let Wally be sacrificed for him, Barry decided to go “Into the Speed Force” to save his brother. Meanwhile back in Central City, Jesse was determined to find and take on Savitar whether the rest of the team supported her or not.
The Flash Recap: "The Wrath of Savitar" - Not Kidding Around
The truth is, The Flash Season 4 has not been without its problems. It started with Flashpoint and continued with the way the team has handled trying to save Iris’ life. “The Wrath of Savitar” started well with Team Flash’s concrete plan to save Iris using Wally’s speed, then drifted into the danger zone by toying with the future. By the end, the tone and intensity shifted in a way that left it as one of the season’s strongest hours.

by Carla Day February 8, 2017 Plus, he teases the upcoming episode and talks about keeping the secret with Clarke, as well as his troubled relationship with Echo.
The Flash Recap: "Attack on Gorilla City" - Welcome to the Jungle
The Flash’s “Attack on Gorilla City” had a promising start when Grodd used Harrison Wells to trap Team Flash. Overall Grodd’s plan was one of the strongest aspects of the episode and sets up next week’s major gorilla vs. human battle on Earth-1. The letdown was the lack of intelligence shown by Team Flash at times.
The 100: Nadia Hilker on Luna’s Loss and Lack of Trust
The 100’s last Nightblood came to the brink of death on last night’s “The Four Horsemen,” but miraculously Luna (Nadia Hilker) survived. Did her black blood protect her from the radiation similar to how Becca Pramheda (Erica Cerra) was able to survive on the ground after the first Praimfaya? Luna may be alive, but her journey will not get any easier.
The 100: Bob Morley on Bellamy Leading with Clarke, and More
Life has never been easy for anyone on The 100, but the situation is even more dire now with the imminent end of the world from another Praimfaya (Nuclear Apocalypse). Bellamy (Bob Morley) and Clarke (Eliza Taylor) return to Arkadia in Season 4’s second episode, “Heavy Lies the Crown,” and keep that information close while looking for a way to save humanity.
The Flash Recap: "Untouchable" - Who's the Hero?
Who’s the real hero? In “Untouchable,” The Flash approached this question from both directions. There was the straightforward look at those who publicly display heroic actions, but it was also addressed in regards to whether someone who has done wrong can be a hero. Each member of Team Flash has their own role to play in making the team successful and each of them have own weaknesses and struggles as well.
The 100 Season 4: Zach McGowan on King Roan's Reign
Nothing can take down the King of Azgeda! On The 100, Roan’s survived both a battle to the death with Lexa and a bullet to the chest from Kane. Is there anything that can take him down? With the Flame in his possession, he took control of Polis and protected Skaikru by preserving Lexa’s legacy of the 13 Clan Coalition.
The 100 Cast on Season 4 Turmoil, Octavia's Transformation
There’s never a slow day in the world of The 100. The consistent battles range from finding sustenance to tenuous relationships between the clans, and humanity will be fighting to survive yet another nuclear annihilation. With the destruction of the City of Light and many deaths, Polis is in emotional and political turmoil as the season begins.
The Flash Recap: "Dead or Alive" - Living for the Future
The trouble of knowing the future is you know the future. On The Flash right now, the apprehension of Iris’ looming death has played out with both positive and negative aspects and it looks like that’s going to continue through the rest of the season.
The 100 Season 4 Review: Will Humanity Survive?
Heartbreak. Chaos. Regret. Political instability. Would you expect anything less from The 100? As with the previous three seasons, The 100 Season 4 starts a new chapter in the post-apocalyptic story of the Arkers and the Grounders with a greater threat than the discord between the clans. The world is facing another nuclear annihilation. Will humanity find a way to survive again?
The Flash Recap: "Borrowing Problems from the Future"
Did Team Flash learn nothing from Flashpoint? After berating Barry for saving his mother and affecting their lives, his teammates didn’t even flinch at the idea of manipulating the timeline once again. Instead, they moved forward willy-nilly to change something– anything–on the chance it would save Iris. The Flash‘s “Borrowing Problems From the Future” was frustrating at times because it was a bit of the same ole, but by the end of the hour the good far outweighed the mediocre.
Arrow: Stephen Amell Teases "Fantastical" 100th Episode
The highly anticipated four show DCTV crossover, “Invasion!” is here. Since Arrow‘s premiere, the so-called “Arrowverse” has expanded to include fours shows on the CW, multiple Earths, regular visits between cities, and even recurring characters over more than one show. On last night’s The Flash, the Dominators invaded Central City forcing Barry to seek help from his super friends from Arrow, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow.
The Flash Recap: "Invasion" - The Gang's All Here
Felicity said it best when she declared The Flash’s superhero super-gathering the “best team-up ever!” The CW’s much-hyped four-show DCTV crossover did not disappoint in the first installment of the three part “Invasion!” It was action-packed and full of fun interactions among characters from The Flash, Supergirl, Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow. With so many characters on the scene, it would have been easy for the show to get overwhelmed by them all and lose The Flash’s unique look and tone.
The Flash Recap: "Killer Frost"
While the core of The Flash episode “Killer Frost” was Caitlin’s journey of coming to terms with her abilities and overcoming her power’s villainous pull, the takeaways from the hour were the truth bombs. Barry and his team were forced to confront the truth about their new changed reality, everyone made bad decisions, and Alchemy was revealed. It all started with Savitar. Who is he? The God of Speed or so he proclaimed. He’s certainly fast and he’s able to remain invisible to some people.
The Flash Recap: "Shade" - The God of Speed
The catastrophe of Barry’s time traveling shenanigans became even more tragic in The Flash‘s “Shade.” If you thought Alchemy was a formidable foe, he’s likely nothing compared to the God of Speed, Savitar. Central City has become a magnet for troublesome metahumans, and the problem getting worse by the moment. In the best episode so far this season, the focus was primarily on the ramifications of obtaining metahuman powers and their potential villainous side effects.
The Flash Season 3 Cast on Killer Frost, HR's Backstory, More
Ever since Flashpoint, Team Flash hasn’t been the same that we knew and loved last season. The Flash Season 3 has seen Caitlin dealing with her Earth-2 doppelganger’s icy powers, another new Harrison Wells, a grieving Cisco and a reckless Wally. That’s a whole lot of change, not to mention Barry’s regrets.
Supergirl Cast on Kevin Smith's Fun, Unique Directing Style
Applause. Laughter. Music. That’s what you’ll find on set when Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy) is directing. At the beginning of November, I had the opportunity to visit the Supergirl set with a group of journalists, when we were invited by Smith to watch a scene being filmed. Smith brings his unique and fun directing style to the Greg Berlanti’s DCTV universe again this Fall.
Supergirl Cast on "Crossfire" Reveals, What's Coming Next
As Supergirl gets settled into its second season, the characters and stories have evolved in ways which will challenge Kara and her friends as they never expected. Supergirl’s Season 2 episode “Crossfire,” showcased a hilarious “Mike,” strengthened the friendship between Mon-El and Kara, showed James’ beginning as a vigilante and his partnership with Winn, Alex’s self-examination, and a shocking Luther reveal.
Arrow Season 5: Stephen Amell on Olicity and Susan Williams
Relationships are ch-ch-changing on Arrow. On this week’s “Human Target, Oliver (Stephen Amell) found out that Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) has a boyfriend, Detective Malone (Tyler Ritter), and even more heartbreaking that she kept the relationship a secret from her former fiancé. Ouch! Speaking of changes, on the set in Vancouver Amell cautioned us not to call Oliver a billionaire anymore (“he’s been broke for three years”).
The Flash Recap: "New Rogues" - All's Well That Ends Wells
A well-known villain returned (sorta), two new Rogues were introduced, and Team Flash lost two members but gained another on The Flash Season 3 Episode 4, “The New Rogues.” This hour was a hodgepodge of moving pieces both personally for members of Team Flash as well as with new metahumans in town. But romance was also in the air! Barry and Iris moved beyond their disastrous first date to attempting an everyday-romance of dinner at home and cuddling on the couch.
The Flash Recap: "Magenta" - It's Quick!
Doctor Alchemy stuck again with another Flashpoint metahuman, “Magenta,” on The Flash Season 3 Episode 3. Unlike The Rival, this foe was underwhelming and felt contrived as a means to the end of revealing tidbits about the mastermind and setting up future episodes. Of more interest was the return of Harry and Jesse, Wally’s obsession with regaining his Flashpoint speed, and to a lesser extent, Barry and Iris’s dating challenges.
How Frank Herbert's 'Dune' Warned Of The Rise of Artificial Intelligence
by Will Stape 5 years ago in dune / science fiction / scifi movie / scifi tv 'Dune' Needs No Stinkin' Droids “Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone, there will be nothing.”Only I will remain.
The Flash Recap: "Paradox" -- Ch-ch-changes!
Flashpoint may have ended, but the timeline chaos continued on The Flash Season 3 Episode 2, “Paradox.” Instead of returning to the original timeline and his life, Barry entered an alternate timeline. This new reality was closer to the first, yet it included several differences, including a broken Team Flash. The cohesive family was troubled when the team members couldn’t forgive each other for decisions made.
The Flash Season 3 Premiere Recap: "Flashpoint"
[Editor’s Note: Readers, please welcome our new Flash recapper, Carla Day! Our former Flash recapper Kayti Burt has moved over to Arrow, and will also be recapping Westworld] Flashpoint. That happened in a flash! After the long summer hiatus, The Flash returned a little different than we left it after Barry saved his mother from the Reverse Flash (Eobard Thawne). The premiere started out a little like Pleasantville in tone (with a metahuman twist) until the mirage of paradise quickly faded.
The Flash Season 3: Things to Know Before the Premiere
‘The Flash': 8 Things to Remember Before the Season 3 Premiere Are you ready for Flashpoint? At the end of last season, Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) let his emotions get the better of him and in a split second made a decision with far-reaching consequences going into The Flash Season 3. We were introduced to multiple earths, doppelgangers galore, time remnants, character departures and heartbreaking deaths.
