I could not imagine the journey my younger self would take when I first settled into San Marcos almost five years ago. Coming from Mesquite to San Marcos, I had never toured campus or knew what Texas State looked like outside of online images and orientation modules. It was my first time being so far from my family. I was mainly interested in visual effects but chose to pursue electronic media on a gamble, opening my path to journalism.

In the 30 years she knew Diana “DeeDee” Fuentes, Terry Bertling, associate professor of practice, said Fuentes taught her to emulate her generosity and kindness toward others. Whether it was carrying food for stray cats, cash for homeless people or advice for aspiring journalists, Fuentes, lecturer in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication (SJMC), had endless support for others and knew them by name. “I love those stories,” Bertling said.

Art enthusiasts and curious visitors surrounded MotherShip Studios within an hour of the fourth annual San Marcos Studio Tour to explore the local art scene. The San Marcos Studio Tour is a two-weekend event where local artists and art collectives open their creative spaces for the public to visit. MotherShip Studios, a women-built art space that offers studio spaces to local artists, launched the event last week with a kick-off party on April 3.
