Introduction The distributional range of a species is a fundamental aspect of its ecological and evolutionary dynamics. Populations at the edge of a species' distribution often occupy habitats that differ significantly from those at the center of the distribution, and these peripheral populations can provide key insights into the concept of the realized niche in ecology (Begon et al. 1996, Gaston 2003, Hampe and Petit 2005).
