Carmen Paddock’s Biography

Carmen is a culture critic writing on film, television, theatre, and opera. She is a lover of musicals, 1950s and 1960s Hollywood, and late romantic opera – essentially, all things maximalist. Much of her work explores the process of cross-medium adaptation, looking at how the same stories are told and re-told across time and formats.

She was previously Features Editor at One Room With a View and has written for publications such as The Skinny, Bright Wall / Dark Room, Little White Lies, VAN Magazine, CrookedMarquee, Take One Cinema, Screen Queens, OperaWire, Video Librarian, and FlipScreen.

Film festival coverage, in person and digital, includes the Berlinale (2019, 2020, 2021), Edinburgh International Film Festival (2018, 2019), International Film Festival Rotterdam (2021, 2022), Glasgow Film Festival (2020, 2022), Locarno Film Festival (2021), London Film Festival (2019, 2020, 2021), and BFI Flare (2020). She is adept at delivering swift, clean reviews within the tight turnaround of festival premieres.

Carmen completed her MA in International Film Business at the University of Exeter / London Film School, focusing on digital disruption in the entertainment industry and earning a Distinction First Class. She enjoys looking at how new distribution methods and audience interactions morph boundaries between genres and art forms. A BA in Drama and background in classical music informs her writing on changing theatrical practices, notably in opera.
