Brian Garfield's 1976's Best Novel Edgar Winner
Join Scott Adlerberg as he revisits Hopscotch, 1976's Best Novel. Brian Garfield had written over 50 books by the time Hopscotch, the 1976 Edgar winner for Best Novel, was published. Born in New York City in 1939, Garfield started writing young, and his first book came out when he was eighteen. Throughout the 1960s, he wrote mainly westerns, churning out three or four novels per year under different pseudonyms.
1975's Best Novel Edgar Winner
Join Jeremy Finley as he investigates this Vatican heist gone terribly wrong. Perhaps you know the sensation: that an inanimate object has somehow found you. That perfect-fitting, too soft-to-be-true t-shirt that was shoved on a sale rack with your favorite line from Star Wars or The Godfather or whatever you want emblazoned on the front.
HEARTS OF THE MISSING
Narrator Laura Jennings believably delivers the intonations of a number of Native American characters in this mystery. What appears to be a straightforward missing persons case involving members of a local Pueblo tribe takes on a supernatural twist when police sergeant Nicky Matthews has a vision of an old woman who may or may not be the Wind Mother, or "kachina." Jennings portrays characters who range from deep and serious young men to gravelly and steady old women.
'Hearts of the Missing' is a baffling mystery
Nicky Matthews, a Pueblo, N.M., police sergeant assigned as liaison to the Tsiba’ashi D’yini reservation’s police department, has a few things going for her. She’s smart and tenacious. She respects, and has gained the respect of, the native people. And she has so internalized their culture that she’s visited by ghosts who provide warnings and premonitions. But she also has some things going against her.
From Page to Screen with Death Wish: The Case of the Disappearing Conscience
When his wife is killed and his daughter left in a vegetative state after a brutal assault, a staunch liberal seeks comfort in vigilante justice, gunning down the monsters who stalk the savage street of 1970s New York City. And in the end, he finds himself deeply conflicted over his descent into violence. Sounds a lot like the 1974 film Death Wish directed by Michael Winner. Everything except that last part. Anyone who’s seen the movie knows there is no such moral ambiguity.

By John Valeri December 7, 2018 The best way to spread Christmas cheer is reading cozies throughout the year! Christmas comes but once a year—and with it, a bookish bounty of murder, mayhem, and merriment!
