Little over a century ago, Bowdoin’s seventh president, William DeWitt Hyde, envisioned Bowdoin as a space in which students could learn how to be home “in all lands and all ages.” So, as Bowdoin prepares students today to be competent in an increasingly globalized—and multilingual—world, why is it that a student can spend four years at Bowdoin without exposure to a single non-English language?
Juggling Handshake appointments, cover letters and interviews on top of an already-packed course load, students often struggle to keep up during internship application season, and the COVID-19 pandemic has only added another layer of complexity to the process. However, despite setbacks and difficulties, Bowdoin students and staff have found creative ways to adapt their summer plans to the uncertainties of the pandemic.
In a semester marked by social distancing and COVID-19 tests, Bowdoin’s swim and dive team has exchanged their usual caps and goggles for face masks. Yet even as they struggle to navigate a new reality of pool reservations, Zoom meetings and dryland workouts, Bowdoin’s swimmers and divers are doing what they can to make the most of this unusual semester. When upperclass students returned to campus this spring, they brought with them vastly different fall experiences.
