The Making of a Cover Story: Bon Appétit’s First Innovation Issue
Photography by Maciek Miloch When making a magazine, visually-driven features—those where images drive the storytelling—are prime real estate. Add a ‘conceptual cover’ to that, and you’ve got yourself a happy art department. When our Editor-in-Chief, Jamila Robinson, entrusted us with creating Bon Appétit's first-ever Innovation Issue, the art department seized the opportunity to shake things up; we opened the doors to our photography community and visual contributors for photo pitches.
The Intricate Art of Wagashi Original
Rice flour, sweet beans, sugar, and water. These are the humble materials used to make wagashi—painstakingly crafted, bite-size tea snacks once prized by the Japanese imperial court. Practitioners who have trained in the tradition, which dates back to the Edo period (1603–1868), dedicate hours to grinding, kneading, and molding each component. Abstract Background Idiom skills are essential for children to access age‐appropriate media, curriculum resources and teaching. Children with developmental language disorder (DLD) require support to develop the ability to understand and define idioms. However, research investigating one‐to‐one and classroom‐based idiom skill intervention for children with DLD is limited.
‘What's cooking?’ A comparison of an activity‐oriented and a table‐top programme of therapy on the language performance of people with aphasia
Background Many people with aphasia have word‐finding difficulties, with some showing particular difficulties with verbs. Picture‐naming therapy is often used to improve naming, but gains are usually limited to therapy items and do not transfer to conversation. Therapy where words are produced in sentences and in real‐life activities may be more effective.
Novel accent perception in typically-developing school-aged children
Many schools in Western countries like the United Kingdom have become increasingly diverse communities in recent years, and children are likely to be exposed to a variety of accents that are different from their own.
