Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is an inflammatory disease of the upper airways subtyped by the absence (CRSsNP) or presence (CRSwNP) of nasal polyps. Allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS) is a clinical subtype of CRSwNP characterized by fungal growth within the sinuses. CRSwNP and AFRS are characterized as type 2 inflammatory diseases based on elevated IL-5 and IL-13 within sinus mucosa. In contrast, CRSsNP is classified as a type 1 disease with elevated type 1 cytokines such as IFN-γ.
