Edinburgh, 30 July (Argus) — Fuel price volatility caused by supply disruptions linked to the war in the Middle East supported electric car demand in the second quarter, according to the IEA. Electric car sales rose by 4pc on the year in April-June and by 35pc from the first quarter. But sales fell by 1pc on the year in January-June because of weaker demand in China. More than 90 countries posted higher electric car sales on the year in the first half of 2026, according to the IEA.

World Bank to drop climate finance targets

Edinburgh, 30 June (Argus) — The World Bank said on 29 June that it will drop its commitment to allocate 45pc of its annual lending to projects with climate co-benefits. US treasury secretary Scott Bessent said in April that the World Bank’s 45pc target needed “jettisoning”, arguing that it “breeds inefficiency, distorts economic decision making, and moves the bank away from its core mission”.

Kazakhstan, Chad to get fossil fuel transition funding

Edinburgh, 23 June (Argus) — Kazakhstan, Trinidad and Tobago and Chad will receive some funding from the $20mn Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance (Boga) fund, to support development of plans to transition away from fossil fuels. The three oil-dependent economies will receive support from Boga and the NDC Partnership, under an initiative launched at the UN Cop 29 summit in Azerbaijan — the so-called first NDC Window.
