According to the Centers for Disease Control, diabetes is currently the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, and its growing prevalence worldwide has led to its classification as an epidemic (1). Out of all cases, >90% of diabetics are classified as having type 2 diabetes (T2D) and nearly half of all individuals with T2D are also diagnosed with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) (2–6).

During the past 2 decades, proteomics, mass spectrometry and bioinformatics have been widely applied to study various kidney diseases, e.g., acute kidney injury (AKI), chronic kidney disease (CKD), diabetic kidney disease (DKD), and glomerular diseases. Such applications will surely lead to breakthroughs in mechanistic insights, biomarker targets for diagnostics/prognostics and best clinical practice.
