Tribute to Dr. John Justin Davis
To the editor, I grew up in Paso Robles and have lived there off and on my whole life. I wrote the below in honor of Justin Davis. Lucky are we to raise our own heroes By Casey Lane - On St Patrick's Day 2025, the North County lost an absolute giant when Dr John Justin Davis left the physical world, suffering a heart attack while vacationing with his family. As a teenager, Justin Davis could have been a character in a Pete Berg movie (gratuitous Friday Night Lights reference).
On Taming Tantrums: Be the Pier, Not the Ocean Original
According to all PBS commercials, life with a 3-year-old was supposed to be one long, well-edited clip of her on a rainy day in a yellow slicker chasing a litter of ducklings across a park, playfully tossing homemade sourdough breadcrumbs into a pond, and racing me back to the car as an afternoon thunderstorm rolled in. I’m a big believer that carseat commercials are birth control’s only real competition.
Silent Rival rocks Rickshaw Stop with moody alternative pop
The crowd, speckled with crisp flannel and soft floral, danced under the disco lights of the Rickshaw Stop on June 29 to a lineup of bands that rocked from beginning to end. Wowing with their captivating stage presence and catchy songs, indie pop groups Silent Rival, courtship. and Night Riots were met with screaming fans and deafening cheers. Silent Rival, the opener, delivered a punchy set.

Berkeley High School students sculpt better future through ‘Art/Act: Youth’
The newest generation of teen activists continues to take the world by storm, marching for our lives and speaking out against injustice. Unsurprisingly, the art students of Berkeley High School are partaking in this movement, using their intellect and artistry to produce masterful commentary on a similarly pressing issue: environmentalism.
GRLwood’s ‘Daddy’ uses scream-pop to examine identity, queerness
GRLwood brings screamo and lo-fi together in a marriage similar to that of a quirky aunt and her wife who, despite an incredibly dysfunctional relationship, remain the greatest couple anyone has ever met. The band’s latest album, Daddy, features simple melodies, catchy bass lines and lyrics that will tickle your soul — then shatter it. The duo from Kentucky calls its unique blend of musicality and enraged shrieks “scream pop,” a term that encapsulates the intense juxtaposition of the work.
Just add (salt) water: 7 tunes for a perfect beach day
Sandy toes, salty spray and sunburns: the true hallmarks of summer vacation. For road trips down the California coast and beach days that taste like pineapple and ocean air, this playlist encapsulates the summer vibes of laid-back leisure, set to ukulele strums and acoustic melodies. With a blasé nonchalance, Canadian singer-songwriter Mac Demarco delivers this beachy tune, his long drawl accompanied by ukulele.
U-turn left behind as work progresses at 45 Bypass, Casey Jones Lane
JACKSON, Tenn. — It’s official — cars can now turn left onto the 45 Bypass from Casey Jones Lane in Jackson. “This has been something that’s been coming,” Old Country Store CEO Clark Shaw said. “We’ve waited for 30-plus years.” Shaw said he was in the first vehicle to go through the new intersection. “You’re euphoric,” he said. “You’re ecstatic.” TDOT Community Relations Officer Nichole Lawrence said it has been a long time coming.
What a Paso Robles girl learned from raising a steer for the Mid-State Fair
In July, we experienced the passing of a friend who was in our lives less than a year, but whose lessons and impact will last a lifetime. My 10-year-old daughter showed her first animal at the California Mid-State Fair. Fuzz was a 1,179-pound Maine/Angus cross steer, raised by a 62-pound California cowgirl with a little help from her family and friends. Emilia knew from the day she met Fuzz that he was going to die.
