Local Mojo members reflect on four-year anniversary
Local Mojo, a student-run organization promoting musical talent in Amherst, recently marked its four-year anniversary. The idea for Local Mojo blossomed in a University of Massachusetts Southwest Residential Area common room on Nov. 21, 2021. Charlie Blacker, the organization’s founder, brought together a crowd of like-minded students to plan sets for basement bands. Local Mojo has come a long way from its early days.

One of the challenges faced in classrooms worldwide is the lack of student engagement and motivation—a disconnect that often stems from a sense of disempowerment and detachment.

By Cassie Brown, MSW, LCSW For all of you who are on the Rainbow Spectrum, all of you who have known the inside of a closet, all of you who have had to tell your story and your truth again (and again, and again, and again) because of the oppressive world in which we live and the assumptions that we all live in, Happy National Coming Out Day! And if you’re IN THAT CLOSET, I respect you. I honor you. It’s okay to stay where you are. Now for right now. Until you feel safe enough.

‘We’re All Going to the World’s Fair’ (2022) Review - A Horrific Escalation Of Internet Challenges
We’ve all seen the “challenges” that have graced the internet for the last few years. Tide Pods. Ice Buckets. Internet viral hits based on a double dog dare that no one dog dared anyone to do. But what if the challenge at hand had a more horrific outcome? What if that challenge could possibly bring about evil (that isn’t just influencer’s dances on Tik Tok)?

'X' Review - Looks Can Really Kill - Geek Vibes Nation
Every time I sit down to see an A24 horror film I know whatever is about to happen I won’t be able unsee it. Sometimes this is a good thing, sometimes it’s not. And yet again, this time around, A24 has bleached my eyes with a unseeable little horrific romp through a Chainsaw Massacre wannabe titled X. X is written, directed and edited by Ti West, director of the cult horror films House of the Devil (2009), The Innkeepers (2011) and one of my favorite found footage horrors, The Sacrament (2013).
'Facing 30 has never been better, Doll'
The tribulations of turning 30 can fill a whole TV season and more. The end of your 20’s and the beginning of a sort of adulthood looms. Facing that sudden realization of a new era of your life suddenly can be met with that comedy drama that the second season of the Hulu show, Dollface, truly captures. Dollface Season 2 Hulu I turn 30 in two days so essentially I felt like Dollface season 2 was sort of tailor made for me.
‘The Woman Across the Street from the Girl in the Window’ Review: Your Friendly Neighborhood Murder Mystery
The Rear Window plot. You see a murder. Or did you? Wait, did you really? What do you do? Who do you call? Not the Ghostbusters, they’re for something else entirely. Regardless, that story line has been played out a few time across film and now it’s reached television with the new series, The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window, streaming now on Netflix. Kristen Bell stars as Anna, the woman who’s across the street. Cheeky huh?

‘TikTok, Boom.’ Sundance 2022 Review
Spencer X appears in TikTok, Boom. by Shalini Kantayya, an official selection of the U.S. Documentary Competition at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. Courtesy of Sundance Institute. I swore I’d never download TikTok. After feeling the heartbreak of watching Vine end I couldn’t understand how this new app could be better. No way. Now I find myself scrolling before bed every night on that very haunting, always entertaining, life at my fingertips app, TikTok.
‘Nothing Compares’ Sundance 2022 Review - Comparing Sinéad OʼConnorʼs Past That Shaped the Future
Sinéad O’Connor appears in Nothing Compares by Kathryn Ferguson, an official selection of the World Cinema: Documentary Competition at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Andrew Catlin. Nothing can compare to the lure that surrounds Sinéad OʼConnorʼ. Most people just have the image of her ripping apart a picture of the Pope on Saturday Night Live in 90’s. It’s a pop culture moment with a lot more behind it than most people understand.
Between Heaven and a Brothel
There’s something about a cheesy romance movie that feeds into the serotonin of your brain. We’ve all watched one, we all have those guilty pleasures that act like cold cookie dough we know not to eat but it tastes pretty good. The niche little sect of whimsical romance, running through the airport movies are always a fun time and it’s hard to really have a stance on one. Redeeming Love, directed by D.J. Caruso, is here to fill up your charcuterie board with cheese ball romance.

A cheesy slice of PTA love
Paul Thomas Anderson knows how to capture love. Be it between Adam Sandler and a punch drunk love or between a man and drinking your milkshake. Sometimes PTA takes the dramatic route, sometimes it’s the comical path. Regardless, we always end up meeting some characters who we fall in love with. Cooper Hoffman and Alana Haim in Licorice Pizza Licorice Pizza, the new film written and directed by Anderson, is showcasing a first love.
‘The Matrix Resurrections’ Review: Read between the pills
There’s something terrifying about a new film from your favorite trilogy. Why? Do we need more to the story? We wait, watching the new trailer, scared of what they will make of a film we loved. Even if the trailer is epic there is still a fear lingering around what someone can do with a beloved character, brought back, rebooted.
A Peek Behind The Golden Curtain
The King’s Man recently had a Global Press Conference where we got to hear some of the behind-the-scenes glorious spy secrets were revealed. 'Oxfords aren't always better than Brogues'
There’s something to be said about an origin story. It’s either hit or miss. There is never a middle ground it seems. But do fans ever really need to know how something came to be? Do we care who Willy Wonka was before he got the factory? Does one really need to know where Alien came from before it met Ripley? Sometimes it’s an intriguing question, where did the legends stem from, but most of the time it should be something for a fan to ponder, not a director to oversee.
The World Recording to Joaquin
Synopsis: “A radio journalist embarks on a cross-country trip with his young nephew.” Sometimes recording your life is as simple as talking into a microphone. It doesn’t have to be pictures or a movie, it can just be sound bites of ideas, a train rolling by, or how your day went. The new A24 film, C’mon C’mon, directed by Mike Mills, captures just that, the audio of a life changed by circumstances and an unlikely friendship.
One Flew Over The Wolf’s Nest
Synopsis: “Believing he is a wolf trapped in a human body, Jacob (George MacKay) eats, sleeps, and lives like a wolf — much to the shock of his family. When he’s sent to a clinic, Jacob and his animal-bound peers are forced to undergo increasingly extreme forms of ‘curative’ therapies.” Finding your wolf pack can be taken literally sometimes. The new Focus Features film, Wolf, directed by Nathalie Biancheri does just that.
Raise the Roof With The Fab Four
Synopsis: “Documentary about the music group The Beatles featuring in-studio footage that was shot in early 1969 for the 1970 feature film ‘Let It Be.’” The Beatles: Get Back [2021]It sure doesn’t feel like a hard day’s night while watching The Beatles create one of the most prolific albums of all time.
Taylor Swift reclaims music with ‘Red (Taylor’s Version)’
Taylor Swift is at it again with another re-release of her old material. In review, it was well intentioned but overproduced. Last month, Swift released a brand new version of her 2012 album “Red” as “Red (Taylor’s Version).” The album was part of a project to re-record her first six albums. “Red (Taylor’s Version)” is comprised of a whopping 30 songs running double the length of the original.
John Wick Answers The Matrix's Call
For the last few years I’ve been dying on one hill. This hill of course is the “John Wick and The Matrix are part of the same universe” hill. The grass is pretty green I like to think, or maybe it’s the red pill, or is it the blue? I don’t remember anymore. But what I do know is I’d like to plead my case on why I believe Matrix Resurrections and John Wick 4 are bound to do a little crossover karate. Matrix Resurrections [2021]Let’s state the obvious, Keanu Reeves is the star of both franchises.
'HOUSE OF GUCCI' Review
Synopsis: “When Patrizia Reggiani, an outsider from humble beginnings, marries into the Gucci family, her unbridled ambition begins to unravel their legacy and triggers a reckless spiral of betrayal, decadence, revenge, and ultimately…murder.” There’s nothing quite like falling in love. There’s nothing like the feeling of being in what seems to be a movie montage with unlimited potential for romance. Then there’s falling in love with money. If you were to marry into an empire would it change you?
'Ron's Gone Wrong' Review
Synopsis: “The story of Barney, an awkward middle-schooler and Ron, his new walking, talking, digitally-connected device. Ron’s malfunctions set against the backdrop of the social media age launch them on a journey to learn about true friendship.” Best friends are hard to come by. Introducing yourself to someone new, as an adult or even as a kid, is a nerve wracking thing. But what if you could buy a best friend?
'You are going to want to answer this call'
Mini Puft in Columbia Pictures’ GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE. Synopsis: “When a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.” It’s the age old question that has been lingering on everyone’s minds since 1984. Who are you gunna call? The answer is, and will always be, the Ghostbusters.
Area country artists support veterans with concert
Musicians made a difference Saturday through the “One For The Heroes Veterans Appreciation Concert.” Tim Zach, Luke Mills and Dylan Bloom teamed up with the country music radio station Y102 for the show in the Pavillion Arena at the Buffalo County fairgrounds. The musicians have wanted to join forces for a while, and it finally happened after a month and a half of planning. “This is super special,” Bloom said. “What a cool thing to bring music together to celebrate our heroes.
'THE DEEP HOUSE' Review
Synopsis: “A young and modern couple who go to France to explore an underwater house and share their findings on social media undergoes a serious change of plans when the couple enters the interior of a strange house located at the bottom of a lake and their presence awakens a dark spirit that haunts the house.” Jaws just got some company for “scariest thing to encounter underwater”.
'A sort of two hour episode of a filmmaker student’s thesis on the decline of a marriage'
Plot Description: “A couple retreat to the island that inspired Ingmar Bergman to write screenplays for their upcoming films when the lines between reality and fiction start to blur.” There’s an Island in Sweden that inspired some of the most prominent works from famous director, Ingmar Bergman. Don’t know him? He directed Seventh Seal, Scenes from a Marriage and other numerous classics that have scenes that would make you say, “oh yeah, that movie”.
'Don't Leave That Notice On Red'
VIDEO Plot Description: “An FBI profiler pursuing the world’s most wanted art thief becomes his reluctant partner in crime to catch an elusive crook who’s always one step ahead.” I picture it like this…someone walked into a pitch meeting and threw all their favorite films onto a table. Indiana Jones, Die Hard 4, The Mummy, some other old 90’s kids films and a found footage reel from a Disneyland ride que.
Students, faculty come together to share ‘American Voices’
By CASSIE BROWN brownc4@lopers.unk.edu Students stepped into the Great Depression era for Loper Opera’s performance of “American Voices.” The show was performed Saturday evening and at a Sunday matinee. The opera production by American composers was a pastiche of scenes, meaning all the excerpts were related to a central theme. “I love that we got to do scenes because it let us see more of what American opera has [to offer],” said Zac Ochsner, a senior performer majoring in music education.
OkSoberfest provides safe activities for Halloween weekend
UNK students gathered at the World Theatre Wednesday for free horror movies, hosted by the UNK Film Club and Peer Health. The Oksoberfest event not only promoted safe activities, but it also served as an exposure opportunity for the two groups. “I think it’s really cool as an opportunity to partner with Peer Health for Oksoberfest,” said Ryan Range, the UNK Film Club president. “Providing students with opportunities to do something besides drinking is really cool.
An invite into the horrific realities of social media
The Beta Test [2021]Plot description: “An engaged Hollywood agent receives a mysterious letter for an anonymous sexual encounter and becomes ensnared in a sinister world of lying, infidelity, and digital data.” Social Media can be a monster. The entertainment industry is one of the most legendary horror icons that no one talks about. Mix the two together and you have an invitation to a cult classic worthy plot, depending on if you RSVP or not.
'PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: NEXT OF KIN' Review
Plot Description: ‘The film follows a young woman trying to discover what happened with her mother, who disappeared years ago, until she discovers a terrifying truth about her mother’s past.” The Blair Witch started the found footage movement 22 years ago. She scared the love of camping out of audiences everywhere. Then, years later Paranormal Activity’s demon came back to scare the love of home ownership out of people.
Single-use restrooms part of bigger inclusivity project
There is a subtle difference about one set of restrooms in the Nebraskan Student Union. The restrooms just north of Subway are now gender-inclusive and intended for single-use. The Division of Student Affairs is working to create an inclusive environment on campus. “We’re not trying to meet a minority access issue,” said Gilbert Hinga, dean of Student Affairs.
