Ngāi Tahu kaiwhakahaere (chairperson) Justin Tipa says the issue of council amalgamation is too important for the iwi “to stand quietly to one side”.SUPPLIED Ngāi Tahu has entered the council amalgamation debate with its own proposal to replace 24 councils with five, aligned to major river catchments within the iwi’s takiwā (district). The Government is forcing a fast-tracked amalgamation of local government and in May it gave councils across New Zealand until August 9 to lodge merger proposals.
