Catherine Field is an award winning journalist whose expertise covers radio, television and print media. Catherine has lived in France since 1999. Prior to that she was based in Hong Kong, where she was China Correspondent for The Observer newspaper.

From 1986 until 1993 she was the Berlin correspondent for The Observer. Catherine Field travelled throughout East Germany in the years leading up to the fall of the Wall.

CLICHY-SOUS-BOIS, France — Clichy-sous-Bois has the feel of an artificial town, parachuted at bureaucratic behest into the featureless fields northeast of Paris and left there to rot. In the 1960s, planners chose this spot for a "Grand Ensemble" of public housing to lodge workers who came from North and West Africa in droves to do the dirty, boring and dangerous jobs shunned by the native French.

PARIS — The envelope arrives with the address painstakingly handwritten and the stamp with the Queen’s head always evenly placed in the top right-hand corner. The postman stops his bike to slide the missive through the letterbox and the dog lets out two yaps. It’s time for me to make tea, and read. The letter comes from Joyce, my 75-year-old mother-in-law in England.
