Theater Scene 1 (An 11-year-old of any gender, race, ethnicity. There is a bird feeder. Some bird sounds, it is dawn.) SOLLY No one was up, I felt alone, I was going to refill the bird feeder but… (Solly picks up a pencil, a protractor and starts to make a list.) One. Call Darren Woods, he’s the head of Exxon oil, just tell him to stop burning oil. Ask him has he ever seen a hummingbird stopping in the middle of the air? (Solly circles this.) The air, Mr. Woods.
Theatre is just one the forms of entertainment we have enjoyed together since early times. Like ancient theatre, contemporary theatre can take us to faraway places, bring on laughter or tears, and can ask the big questions. As long as there have been people, there have been social justice issues. These plays look at social justice issues from various viewpoints. Plays are not only entertainment, but also seek to provide perspective and provoke thought.
This profound listening experience is a live recording of a January 2017 L.A. Theatre Works production, directed by Judyann Elder. Based on interviews with seven female activists from around the globe, this tour de force was created in 2006 with the support of Vital Voices Global Partnership. The voices have their own distinct accents, indicating a range of cultural heritage, from Northern Ireland to Cambodia.
