The creation of informal trails by users often exacerbates existing trail impacts and can cause additional damage, but it can be difficult to monitor the creation of informal trails. The ability to use VGI and other online data to map and estimate likely environmental impacts of mountain biking trails was examined in Nerang National Park, Australia. Informal trails were steeper than formal trails, mostly in the higher, more remote parts of the Park and traversed an important wetland catchment.
