Catch You on the Flipside
At first glimpse the plot of this fast-moving novel seems to lack promise: 1980s casinos, the last days of the Ferdinand Marcos regime, a creepy stalker called Regrettable Russell. Not my cup of chai, per se. But Lee Kvern’s perspective-shifting potboiler, with its punchy chapter titles and unexpected weavings of past and present, Manila and Calgary, assassinations and card counting, proves engaging.

The ‘internationalisation agenda’ and the rise of the Chinese university: Towards the inevitable erosion of academic freedom?
The production of knowledge has always been a boundary-crossing endeavour. Universities are typically one of society’s most ‘global’ institutions and academics have tended to be cosmopolitan citizens (Teichler, 2004: 8). State Transformation and Authoritarian Governance: The Emergence of Participatory Authoritarianism?
It is commonly assumed that authoritarian governments do not wish to involve citizens in questions of governance or public administration. Instead, conventional wisdom has it that the leaders of such states seek to disengage and depoliticise their citizens and, when ‘mobilization’ is required, ‘the masses’ are either ‘coerced’ on threat of violence or ‘co-opted’ with rewards and bribes.
