To the editor, Coming off the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, many of us have been reflecting on his legacy and, in these difficult times, searching for hope in the model he set before us. We remember his warning that the greatest tragedy of the Civil Rights Movement “was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people.” His words summon us again to ask what it means to be good, what must be said now, and how we ought to say it.

To the editor, Since we formed Indivisible Greater Grand Forks in March, loved ones have said to me, “I’m glad you found a passion to pursue in retirement.” I usually stammer a sort of thank-you, but over time, I’m developing a more honest reply. Defending democracy is not about passion. Compassion maybe. But it’s not something I rise each day excited to get after. Teaching was a passion, and I was blessed to be absorbed by it for 43 years. Championing democracy is something else altogether.
