JUDITH McNICOL
First published: March 2026 Geologist Judith McNicol studied the age-old lines of the Earth before embarking on an exploration of her own inner landscape Contours, sediments, erosion patterns and the traces left by ancient rivers were once the language of Judith McNicol. Born in London in 1948, McNicol often felt alone as a child, detached from and fearful of other people, happy to disappear into her inner world. She sought solace exploring and collecting rocks, fossils and other “treasures” .

We don't need more research, we need action. Some of what must be done is already outlined in South African laws and policies. The Children's Act, for instance, makes violence prevention interventions mandatory. Earlier this week, Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga said in Parliament we need to undertake more research into why some boys become violent men who abuse women, and what can be done to stop it happening.

My View: RVC President Jensen sees 'fields of diamonds'
By Cathy Ward When Rock Valley College President Dr. Doug Jensen first saw the Rockford area's raw education and employment statistics a few months before he took the job last fall, he was neither surprised or dismayed as most educators might well have been.“Of the 365,387 residents of this area, I saw we had 41,693 without a high school diploma, 11,745 with less than a 9th grade education, 12,338 unemployed and 38,141 whose first language was not English,” Jensen said.“But here's what I...

My View: 10 reasons why Boone County public safety sales tax failed
By Cathy Ward Wonder why Boone voters defeated the public safety sales tax? Here's my opinion as a longtime resident and board member. I think there are at least 10 major reasons that led to this defeat. But first let me say that I truly believe all of us want excellent public safety to be a priority. Second, I do not believe the defeat of the referendum is any reflection of the leadership of Sheriff Dave Ernest or newly elected board chair Karl Johnson.

My View: Boone County veterans face land mines on home front
Boone County's 3,900 veterans, who lived through life-and-death challenges, never expected to come back home to fight for basic assistance, but that's what happened. And today, they are still on the battle front. For decades, while veterans with special medical or financial needs throughout the state, including Winnebago County, received money from county coffers for basic housing, utilities and medical assistance, it never happened here.In Boone County, veterans' volunteer
My View: Boone County planning costs likely to double
A costly, challenging time faces Boone County taxpayers in the wake of the county's controversial divorce from its decades-old Belvidere-Boone planning agreement. The 8-4 vote by the County Board in February for this breakup is likely to at least double the costs for its planning department's basic needs. Before the vote to terminate the agreement, urged by Board Chairman Bob Walberg, county taxpayers' share of the costs totaled $50,000 or less a year.
My View: Boone County breakup with Belvidere planning department a very bad move
The Boone County Board voted 8-4 Wednesday to terminate its decades-old cooperative planning agreement with the city of Belvidere. This termination ends years of sharing costs, expertise and frank talks among various planning groups and elected and appointed officials on dozens of planning issues.I consider this divorce a very bad move since Boone County leaders have not analyzed costs, ramifications, reactions or any pertinent details of this breakup.Chairman Bob Walberg has urged county
