Introduction Management strategy evaluation (MSE) provides a simulation framework to test the performance of living marine resource management (Sainsbury, 2000; Punt et al., 2016a). MSE has now been adopted broadly for use in single-species fishery management, often using a relatively simple “operating model” that projects population dynamics of one species forward in time.

Most echinoderms, (think starfish, urchins and sea cucumbers) are symmetrical along five different axes, usually with five arms. Not sunstars, they have more than 20 arms that pry open mussels, clams and scallops. The sunstar at Rocky Point was once famed among marine biologists for its keystone role as top predator of the rocky intertidal. By eating a variety of prey, it helped keep numbers down and thus maintained the diversity of the rocky habitat.
