|
By Celenis Rodríguez Moreno, Rodríguez Moreno
| Dialnet - Universidad de La Rioja
English This essay analyzes the encomienda system, examining the relation between race and gender in colonial society and its central role in shaping the modern colonial gender system. The encomienda was the institution that defined the political and economic design of the Iberian project after the conquest for two centuries. Its mode of operation allows us to observe the formation of the racial structure that would become the cornerstone of the economy and social hierarchy in the colonial world.
