The 2024 Summer Paralympic Games kicked off today in Paris. Of the 225 athletes who will compete for Team USA, ten are from Texas. And five of those are from Houston or the surrounding area. The Paralympics originally grew out of a British hospital for World War II veterans in 1948 and feature athletes with disabilities. And some of those athletes compete with the assistance of guides, like the kind that work with a local organization called Eye Can Alliance.

Throughout the summer, Houston Matters has been visiting area attractions and museums across the Houston region. In the audio above, we take you to Children’s Museum Houston. That’s where producer Celeste Schurman visits with the museum’s CEO Rayanne Darensbourg and with a number of families navigating their way through the venue.
