Since the plants keep spreading, McKiernan said, the next step would be to fly a plane or drone overhead and coat the whole area with chemicals, which he won’t do. “It’ll kill the legumes, it’ll kill the native forbs (wildflowers). Rural Kansas hospitals face urgent closure threats

A report found that Kansas has 28 rural hospitals at immediate risk of closure. More rural Kansas hospitals are at risk of immediate closure than in any other state. That's according to a recent report by the nonprofit policy organization Centers for Healthcare Quality and Payment Reform. It found that out of the about 100 rural Kansas hospitals analyzed, 69 are at risk of closure and 28 are at immediate risk. Texas has 26 rural hospitals at risk of immediate closure.

By the mid-20th century, the wildlife had taken a beating in this waterway that flows from the Missouri Ozarks into Kansas and down to Oklahoma’s Grand Lake, a popular vacation spot. “The fish community was greatly reduced,” said James Whitney, a biology professor at Pittsburg State University in Kansas. “There was basically no mussels at all.” Losses like that batter the food web.
