A recent question on social media prompted me to consider an interesting albeit rare scenario, and to consider the definitions around the boundaries of our playing surfaces (writes Ask the umpire expert, Allan Thornhill). Let me start by outlining some definitions and then I will get into the detail of the scenario as raised. We are all familiar with and aware of the rink that we play on, the width, the length, the ditches at either end and the banks and surrounds.

Rehearsals have kicked off for the Glasgow 2026 Opening Ceremony, which will take place on 23 July in the iconic Hydro, officially lifting the curtain on 10 days of world-class sporting celebration in the city. Volunteer cast members have gathered at one of the first rehearsal sessions as Glasgow 2026 prepares to welcome the world in 20 days.
