One confirmed dead following plane crash near Green Lake, B.C.
70 MILE HOUSE, B.C. — One person has been confirmed dead after a plane crash in the South Cariboo. Bill Yearwood of the Transportation Safety Board says the light aircraft crashed upon landing at an airstrip near Green Lake, east of 70 Mile House. "It's a private aircraft that crashed on landing. The pilot has been taken to hospital with serious injuries. The passenger is reportedly deceased," explained Yearwood.
Williams Lake evacuation order partially lifted, alert still in place
WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — Residents in the Lake City have been given the all clear to return home after being forced out on Saturday, July 15th. The city still remains on evacuation alert. Both the south and north routes into Williams Lake along Highway 97 are open. Cariboo Regional District chairman Al Richmond says the evacuees should still keep their belongings packed because they may have to leave at a moment's notice because an evacuation alert is now in effect.
Smoky skies return to Kamloops
KAMLOOPS — The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, along with Interior Health has expanded the smoky skies advisory in several areas. Those areas include, Cariboo (North and South), Chilcotin, 100 Mile, North Thompson, South Thompson, and Shuswap.
Wildfire erupts near Monte Lake, B.C.
MONTE LAKE, B.C. — A estimated 30 hectare wildfire has broken out near Monte Lake this afternoon (July 26th). Fire Information Officer Justine Hunse tells CFJC Today, "We have air support and ground crews en route at this time. The fire is highly visible from Highway 97 and nearby communities. There are structures threatened at this time." As of 6:20pm, the Thompson Nicola Regional District has declared a state of emergency Electoral L, "Grasslands" in the Monte Lake area.
Parks within Kamloops to re-open following extreme fire danger
KAMLOOPS — Recent cooler weather has allowed the City of Kamloops to re-open parks that were closed due to the extreme fire risk. Kamloops Fire Rescue Chief Mike Adams stated in a news release, "It is important that the public remain aware of the potential for fire and act accordingly, including adhering to the no smoking in public parks bylaw." Adams notes that provincial firefighting resources are now more readily available if they are required.
TNRD rescinds some evacuation alerts near Little Fort, Clearwater
CLEARWATER, B.C. — Residents in the North Thompson communities of Little Fort and Clearwater can breathe a bit easier as several evacuation alerts have now been rescinded. A full interactive map of the affected residents can be found here. Evacuation orders and alerts remain in place for some properties in the Hallamore Lake, McCarthy Lake, and Dunn Lake areas, on the east side of the North Thompson River.
Wells Gray Provincial Park to re-open
CLEARWATER, B.C. — Residents and tourists alike will be allowed to again explore the expansive Wells Gray Provincial Park come 7am, Tuesday July 25th. The park was closed on Sunday, July 9th out of an abundance of caution due to the extreme fire risk. No wildfires were ever burning inside the park during the closure. According to a news release from Tourism Wells Gray, the park is the most visited provincial park in the Thompson-Cariboo region. Campfires are still prohibited across British Columbia.

Small wildfire ignites near Clearwater
CLEARWATER, B.C. — B.C. wildfire crews are taking no chances on a new wildfire burning 13 kilometres southwest of Clearwater, in the Lemieux Creek area. Fire Information Officer Justine Hunse says smoke from this fire is visible from Highway 5 north, but it is not considered an interface fire. "We have crews and air tankers actioning the fire right now, and we also have helicopters en route," said Hunse.

Police searching for missing teenager who escaped arrest, jumped in river
KAMLOOPS — Police are now releasing details of a large-scale investigation on the North Shore. Around 2am Kamloops RCMP were alerted to an alleged bicycle theft, shortly thereafter they located the bike. Further efforts aided by a police dog located a teenage girl hiding under a dock in the Thompson River. The suspect was then arrested, but during the arrest, and prior to being placed in handcuffs she managed to escaped custody and re-entered the river.

My morning commute to work in Johannesburg takes me past city streets flanked by the strange strips of green-painted road surface that some people call “bicycle lanes”. But to call them that flies in the face of experience. Usually these lanes are occupied by cars using them as makeshift parking bays; taxis veering to a halt to drop off or pick up passengers – and very occasionally by a brave pedestrian. The one thing I’m pretty confident of never seeing in these lanes is a bicycle.

Coquihalla crash claims one life
KAMLOOPS — One person is dead, and two are in hospital following a crash on the Coquihalla highway near Inks Lake just after 7pm on Saturday, May 13th. The single vehicle crash happened when a northbound vehicle lost control and rolled into the centre median. A 61-year-old passenger in the front seat of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, and a passenger in the rear of the vehicle received non-life threatening injuries, and were transported to hospital in Kamloops. RCMP Sgt.
City of Kamloops asks Westsyde residents to conserve water
KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops is asking residents in Westsyde north of Harrington Road to minimize their water usage. The plea comes after a water line broke earlier this afternoon. The water line feeds the North Westsyde reservoir, and the city has currently lost the ability to refill the reservoir. Indications from crews is that the problem should be fixed by midnight.
TNRD declares state of emergency in the Nicola region
MERRITT, B.C. - The Thompson Nicola Regional District has declared a state of emergency in 'Area M - Nicola Valley - North' The state of emergency is due to flooding in the area. Information Officer Debbie Sell indicated in a news release, "This Declaration provides the TNRD with the authority to perform emergency works within and around waterways, including constructing or placing erosion protection works or flood protection works when an emergency is declared.

KAMLOOPS — City officials have declared a state of emergency, and evacuated 8 homes due to a unstable slope. The affected properties are on Ramage Road, which connects with the Yellowhead Highway north of Rayleigh.
Victims identified in Williams Lake double homicide
WILLIAMS LAKE, B.C. — Police have confirmed the names of the victims of a double homicide as 30-year-old Jonathan Sellars and 26-year-old Devon Stewart. Cpl. Madonna Saunderson said they were first called to a home on Mackenzie Avenue where they found the two victims. Police determined the deaths to be suspicious, and the North District Major Crime Unit is leading the investigation. RCMP say they don't believe there is a risk to the general public, and no arrests have been made public at this time.
Mudslide covers Yellowhead Highway north of Rayleigh
KAMLOOPS — Crews spent the evening cleaning up a minor mudslide on Highway 5 North, near Rayleigh. The slide came down shortly after 6:30pm, and covered all four lanes of the highway. Crews were able to keep lane closures to a minimum, and the slide was completely clear about a hour after coming down.

Police search for attempted robbery suspect
KAMLOOPS — Police are searching for a suspect following an attempted robbery at the 7-Eleven store on Summit Drive. RCMP Sgt. Darren Michels stated, "A lone male approached the counter and demanded money from a clerk. The clerk refused to provide the suspect with any money and the suspect then quickly fled the store on foot." The suspect is described as: The suspect was noted to be missing his two front teeth. Seven snowboarders reported missing near Sun Peaks
KAMLOOPS — Search and Rescue members are heading up to Sun Peaks at this hour to locate a possible 7 snowboarders who went out of bounds. Alan Hobler with KSAR told CFJC Today, "We are currently deploying our drone team, and we have 18 members heading up there." The snowboarders are believed to be in the Henderson Creek area, where the avalanche hazard level is low. "Conditions are currently fairly stable, we do have 2 CAA level two avalanche forecasters that are going to be out with us.

KAMLOOPS — A local police officer is receiving praise for helping a disabled man get out of a sticky situation. Last Friday, January 17th, RCMP Constable Sukhdeep Toor responded to a call from a BC Transit bus driver seeking help for a man who had a broken down wheelchair. "When Cst. Toor arrived on scene, the man in the wheelchair advised him that the motor on his chair had broken. The disabled man had no family to call, and no money for a cab. Cst.

Downtown Kamloops bank robbed, suspect still at large
KAMLOOPS — Police are searching for a suspected bank robber following a brazen daylight robbery at the TD Bank at Third Avenue and Victoria Street. In a news release Cpl. Jodi Shelkie stated, "At approximately 1:35 pm the downtown location of the Canada Trust reported that a man had just robbed the bank and had left on foot heading up Third Avenue towards the hospital." Shelkie adds the suspect insinuated that he had a weapon, but a weapon was not produced, and no one was injured.

Former Kamloops Mountie pleads guilty to cocaine possession
KAMLOOPS — Former Kamloops RCMP Officer Randi Love has pleaded guilty to possession of controlled substance. Love was facing trafficking charges, but entered a plea to simple possession. According to her lawyer, Brad Smith, a date for a sentencing hearing has not been set. Love was the Kamloops detachment's media relations officer in 2009. According to RCMP E-Division, police became aware of allegations involving Love on July 16, 2015, and launched a comprehensive investigation.
Train carrying coal derails near Ashcroft
ASHCROFT, B.C. — A train has derailed just south of Ashcroft. Cache Creek Mayor John Ranta tells CFJC Today a total of 33 rail cars left the track, and 4 ended up in the Thompson River. CP Rail Public Affairs & Communications Advisor Salem Woodrow told CFJC Today in a news release, "There were no injuries to the crew and no dangerous goods involved. All appropriate emergency notifications have been made. CP takes this incident extremely seriously.
Police plead with drivers to slow down in the snow
KAMLOOPS — Emergency responders in the Southern Interior are issuing a plea to drives to slow down. Sgt. Mike Pears with Central Interior Traffic Services said in a news release, "Police in the Merritt area have observed drivers traveling in excess of the 120 km/h posted speed limit. However the posted speed limit is for clear dry ideal road conditions." Multiple accidents have been reported on all major highways in the Interior.
