“They Finna Come in Here and Jump on Somebody Ass”
If this were a normal NBA season, we’d probably have a normal NBA playoff preview planned. But this ain’t your average playoffs — so we brought in our good friends Channing Frye and Iman Shumpert to separate the contenders from the pretenders. Let’s basketball. Yo, I’m just telling y’all: I watch a whole lotta basketball. And when I’m watching basketball, I’m usually right. Shump Lol. I know a lot of people that play a lot of ball, but I don’t know too many that’s gonna study it like this, man.
Kevin Love and Channing Frye: Mental Health, Sports and Acting "Like a Man"
Channing has had my back for years — with both basketball stuff and life stuff. He’s always been one of the most open communicators I’ve known, which always made it easier for me open up. One big thing I’ve learned from him is something I wanted to highlight in my article about mental health — that we’re all going through something, even if you can’t see it. Channing is the perfect example of that.
Lakers' Frye has appendectomy in Cleveland
The team announced Saturday that its new acquisition had the laparoscopic procedure Friday night in Cleveland. The Lakers say Frye will be re-evaluated after he returns to Los Angeles next weekend. Frye was spending the All-Star break in Ohio with his family. He was with the Cavaliers before being traded to the Lakers on Feb. 8 along with Isaiah Thomas in exchange for Jordan Clarkson and Larry Nance Jr. Frye is averaging 4.8 points and 2.4 rebounds per game this season.
The Scar | By Jeff Green
As a professional athlete, I rely on my body to listen to my mind like a Formula 1 driver expects his car to respond to his maneuvers. I take great pride in my fitness, strength and athletic ability. I know that I have a God-given gift. One morning, five years ago, that special gift was taken away.

The moment I went down I knew. As soon as I felt my knee buckle, and I hit the ground — I knew right away what had happened. I knew right away what it would mean. Not exactly how I pictured my comeback season coming to an end. But as tough as the injury itself was where it really has hurt? It’s not where some people think. It’s not for what it means for my future: I’ve been through this before, and I came back better.

You may have heard about it. And if you haven’t heard about it, well, then … I’m sorry I brought it up. Because this injury, to be honest, it was not a smart one. It was in late January, during a home game against the Mavericks, in the heat of the moment. I saw this chair on our bench, and the chair was acting like a punk, and so I punched it. You always hate to let the team down, no matter what. But with something like this â€? man, it was worse than just you are letting the team down.
Sorry For Yelling, Now Let's Go Get a Juicebox | By Channing Frye
Over the past year, I’ve achieved more than I ever dreamed. I’ve also had more taken away than I ever knew I could handle. During a game midway through the season, I was completely lost emotionally. I wasn’t smiling. I wasn’t enjoying the game. I was just going through the motions. LeBron noticed that I was withdrawn, and he walked over to me during a timeout. I snapped out of my daze for a moment and looked over at Bron. He looked really serious. No expression. And then he said.

A Yonkers Tale | The Players' Tribune
There are a lot of myths about basketball players from New York, but there’s one I want to bust right off the jump. They say the only thing New Yorkers know how to do is dribble. I get it. When people look back, they think of Kenny Anderson, Stephon Marbury and Sebastian Telfair, the guys that had the ball on a string. But that’s not all New York kids can do anymore. We can shoot, we can get to the rim anytime we want. We don’t get enough credit for that evolution.
The Reason I Didn't Quit | By Myles Turner
I wanted to walk away for good. I was fed up. It was my freshman year of high school, and I had just started taking basketball seriously. At the time, I played for four different teams. I played for my school, I played for my dad’s men’s league team, and for two different AAU teams. I had practice every day of the week, including weekends, and usually it was two practices a day. If it wasn’t practice, it was a track workout or a two-hour lifting session. I was burnt out.
Living the Dream | By Andrew Miller
The feeling you get when you win a Major League Baseball playoff series is tough to describe. It’s almost like you don’t know where you are, and for a while you can’t feel anything. It’s as though your body doesn’t know what to make of it. It’s like you’re moving even though you’re just standing still. But then there’s a certain energy that takes over when you reach the clubhouse to celebrate. It becomes a frantic scene of hugs and congratulations all around.
PastarÄŤtis | By Kristaps Porzingis
When I was growing up in Latvia, my older brothers, Janis and Martins, had a nickname for me. PastarÄ?tis is an old Latvian slang term meaning “youngest child in the family,â€? but the way my brothers used it, it meant aloof. They would say it all the time. When I’d mess up or something, they’d yell, “Yo, pastarÄ?tis!â€? I’d be like, “No, I’m not pastarÄ?tis!â€? I guess they would call me that because on the court, I would live in the moment — I’m just playing basketball.
Scouting Myself: Harrison Barnes
Welcome to Scouting Myself, a new series where professional athletes give elite high school athletes the opportunity of a lifetime: The chance to break down film, run drills and discover what it takes to make it to the next level — straight from the pros themselves. The next episode features Dallas Mavericks forward Harrison Barnes. My goal from an early age was always to play in the NBA. I always wanted to be on the same court as Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.
Let’s Enjoy This Wonderful French Toast
Every time I step on the court now, I’m appreciative. It wasn’t always this way. Before every game, I have this 30-second routine where I’ll pretend like I’m doing some stupid stretch, but what I am really doing is just closing my eyes and taking in the moment, imagining every arena and every city I’ve been in, smelling all the smells, seeing all the fans. I’ll never forget Game 5 of the Finals, back in Golden State. We were down 3–1 in the series.
