EARTH, ATMOSPHERIC, AND PLANETARY SCIENCES Near-infrared image of Uranus and its moons from the James Webb Space Telescope. Image credit: NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope. How the moons of Uranus formed The spin axis of Uranus is tilted by 98° relative to the Solar System, possibly due to an ancient giant impact. The planet’s five regular moons orbit in the same tilted plane, but the origin of the moons’ tilted orbits is unclear. Michael Brown et al.

Biomolecular assemblies through weak noncovalent interactions: Higher-order transient structures and their condensate phase
Abstract Recent data suggest that many membrane proteins spontaneously organize into spatial patterns through weak noncovalent interactions. These weak interactions are protein type-specific and underlie the formation of higher-order transient structures (HOTS), which can function as 10 to 100 nanometer-sized, transient hubs of membrane signaling.

Combinatorial decision-making driven by multicomponent surface condensates Edited by Ned S. Wingreen, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ; received September 30, 2025; accepted May 18, 2026 by Editorial Board Member Paul Chaikin Significance In living cells, biomolecules self-organize into compartments called condensates that form by phase transitions, often around surfaces such as DNA and membranes.
Why environmental scientists need ethics training more than ever before
In the face of mounting environmental crises, scientists and decision-makers must often balance complex and competing goals, including mitigating climate change, conserving biodiversity, and supporting human livelihoods (1). These goals sometimes align to produce win–win outcomes for people, animals, and ecosystems—for example, community-based conservation projects or crop-planting incentives that benefit farmers and pollinators.

Effect of Strength Spatial Variability on the Probabilistic Post-Landslide Behavior of Heterogeneous Slopes Under Rainfall
1 Introduction Landslides are common geological disasters globally, significantly affecting public safety and social property [1]. Under the influence of land-atmospheric interactions, rainfall is recognized as the main cause of landslides worldwide [2]. Factors such as global warming and the urban heat island effect have significantly increased the frequency of extreme weather events, including heavy rainfall, in recent years, resulting in an increasing number of rainfall-induced landslides.

The impact of cognitive dissonance under filters on tourists' social media complaints: the moderating role of influencer characteristics
ABSTRACT Social media influencers employ filters to augment the visual appeal of destinations as a significant strategic approach; however, this practice may result in cognitive dissonance among tourists. In response, this study aims to investigate the mechanism of cognitive dissonance under filters on tourists' social media complaints based on the theory of cognitive dissonance, and conducts two studies to validate the hypothesis.

Competence for transcellular infection in the root cortex involves a post-replicative, cell-cycle exit decision in Medicago truncatula
eLife Assessment This is a fundamental cell biological study of host responses during symbiotic microbial infection of plants. Compelling imaging-based approaches using genetically encoded cell cycle markers show that in Medicago truncatula root cortex cells, early rhizobial infection events are associated with cell-cycle re-entry, but once the infection is established, host cells exit the cell cycle.

CORRESPONDENCE 18 February 2025 The SEAMLESSM4T speech- and text-translation tool published in January (SEAMLESS Communication Team Nature 637, 587–593; 2025) represents a major advance for multilingual and multimodal machine translation. It could be used in medical settings to aid communication between health-care professionals and those receiving care. Nevertheless, refinements could enhance its usefulness as a global communication tool.
