How much should we mind about Nigel Farage and the sources of his money, and Reform and the source of its money, and the relation between those two things? I feel rather torn. I am militantly opposed to the state funding of political parties, because it leads to state control. If political parties cannot convince citizens, rich or poor, to put their money where those parties' mouths are, that shows they are unpersuasive. It is a good test.

If, as expected, Andy Burnham soon reaches 10 Downing Street, he will have been the only Labour prime minister to have denounced Margaret Thatcher in his campaign for the post. Michael Foot and Neil Kinnock denounced her furiously, but that may be partly why they never achieved power. Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, although opposed to many Thatcher policies, were at pains to praise her achievements as a leader.
