Many New Mexicans are told small changes in oil and gas rules will keep them safe. However, letting companies self-report pollution makes these rules weak. When companies report their own problems, they may hide the true damage they cause. This gives people a false sense of security while pollution continues unabated. It’s difficult to hold operators accountable when pollution is mostly invisible. Lawmakers and the oil industry say they are keeping a close watch on pollution.
