1. Introduction The intestine plays a pivotal role in health and disease. Its principal function is to absorb nutrients from the food we ingest, but it also participates in drug transport, metabolism, and the secretion of essential hormones. Furthermore, the gut wall is home to large microbial communities, which participate in homeostasis through protection against pathogens [1,2] and the production of vitamins and short-chain fatty acids [3].
