Rate of herbicide resistant weed development: A Canadian Prairie case study
ABSTRACT Genetically modified crop adoption in Canada has been the key driver in removing tillage as the lead form of weed control, due to increased weed control efficiency. Land use has transitioned from the use of summerfallow to continuous cropping, predominantly involving zero or minimum tillage practices. Prairie crop rotations have diversified away from mainly cereals to include three-year rotations of cereals, pulses, and oilseeds.
Quantifying changes in the environmental impact of in-crop herbicide use in Saskatchewan, Canada
Materials and Methods This research aims to calculate the field use environmental impact quotient (EIQ-FU) for herbicides used postemergence in the crop rotation periods of 1991 to 1994 and 2016 to 2019. The EIQ, a comprehensive tool developed by Kovach et al. (Reference Kovach, Petzoldt, Degni and Tette1992), evaluates the environmental impacts of pesticides. It encompasses three key components: farmworker impact, consumer impact, and ecological impact.
Correlating Genetically Modified Crops, Glyphosate Use and Increased Carbon Sequestration
3. Results The survey was completed by 137 Saskatchewan crop farmers. After incomplete and duplicated responses were removed, the final sample size consisted of 127 farmer data sets. Sixty-four participants provided information on land use and crop rotation practices for the 1991–1994 period, and 126 provided identical information for the 2016–2019 period. Sixty-three survey participants provided data for both time periods.
Farm data can change sector’s future
Published: December 3, 2020 Opinion The University of Saskatchewan’s Crop Rotation Survey is collecting information on the progress made by the province’s farmers toward environmental sustainability over the past 25 years. | File photo You have likely been in a situation where you put in long hours of hard work dedicated to achieving a goal, yet have not been recognized for your efforts. Cash is King When it Comes to Farming
Farmers are proud to be landowners, establishing and growing farms that can be passed on through generations. The concept of growing crops on your own soil ignites feelings of pride, community, and tradition. Many farmers also consider land investment to be their retirement fund. However, in a recent Western Producer article, Scott McEwen, an alternative asset value expert, argues that prioritizing land ownership may not always be in a farm’s best interests.

You’ve probably seen Burger King’s latest marketing video featuring Wal-Mart yodeler Mason Ramsey singing about methane emissions from cow farts and burps. The ad promotes Burger King’s “Cows Menu” consisting of beef from cows fed lemon-grass leaves, which some research suggests decreases methane emissions …. [T]he goal of promoting environmental sustainability in the beef sector is commendable. Yet, the video received significant backlash from farmers and members of the agriculture industry.
New Crop Varieties: The Journey from Lab to Field - Varietal Testing at the U of S Grains Innovation Lab
A specialized machine used to conduct the falling number test The Wheat and Durum Quality Laboratory is used at multiple stages of the cereal crop breeding process and helps breeders evaluate potential crop varieties based on end-use suitability, such as baking, malting, or animal feed. Tests conducted in this section of the laboratory are focused on end-use functionality.
