Understanding the Debate on the US-Europe Paradox
Economic Brief September 2026, No. 26-30 Key Takeaways European countries' gross domestic products (GDPs) relative to the U.S. at current purchasing power parity (PPP) have stayed fairly constant since 2001. However, U.S. real GDP at national constant prices has grown much faster than its European counterparts. This apparent paradox can be explained by the U.S. IT boom. While these facts are not being disputed, there is a debate between economists on what this implies for European welfare.
OncoMRD BREAST for Monitoring Minimal Residual Disease in Breast Cancer: A Megadata Large-Scale Retrospective Clinical Correlation Study
You are already at the latest version Background: ctDNA-based NGS MRD testing in breast cancer faces a critical but overlooked limitation: low-frequency somatic mutations from normal aging non-malignant tissues—beyond clonal hematopoiesis—contaminate plasma ctDNA at levels indistinguishable from true MRD signals, creating a specificity ceiling that increased sequencing depth cannot resolve.
Monthly Job Reports: How Do Private Sources Fare?
Economic Brief March 2026, No. 26-08 Key Takeaways The Bureau of Labor Statistics produces monthly estimates on job gains/losses through the Current Employment Statistics' establishment survey. In the past few years, more alternative job reports have become available through private sources, such as ADP, Revelio, LinkUp and Intuit.
Five Decades of Decline: U.S. Construction Sector Productivity
Economic Brief August 2025, No. 25-31 Key Takeaways Construction labor productivity fell by more than 30 percent from 1970 to 2020, while overall U.S. economic productivity doubled over the same period. Despite potential biases in price deflators, multiple studies confirm that the productivity decline is real, with physical measures like housing units per worker showing similar stagnation.

Feasibility and Acceptability of Behavioral Weight Loss Programs for Men in Trade and Labor Occupations: A Pilot Study
1 Background Behavioral interventions remain the first line of treatment for adults with obesity [1, 2]. These interventions are characterized by regular meetings with trained interventionists (> 14 sessions) for at least 6 months. They produce average weight losses of approximately 8% of starting body weight [3].

Developments in Antitrust Policy Against Labor Market Monopsony
Economic Brief March 2024, No. 24-11 Antitrust policies have traditionally focused on merger-induced damages to consumers caused by monopoly. Recently, a literature on monopsony has flourished, particularly when applied to labor. As a result, it would be natural to think about the harm to workers caused by mergers.
S100A8/A9 predicts triple-negative breast cancer response to PIM kinase and PD-1/PD-L1 inhibition
Abstract It remains elusive why some triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients respond poorly to existing therapies while others respond well. Our retrospective analysis of historical gene expression datasets reveals that increased expression of immunosuppressive cytokine S100A8/A9 in early-stage tumors is robustly associated with subsequent disease progression in TNBC.
How Costly Is Rising Market Power for the U.S. Economy?
For an economy to achieve efficiency, it needs to be perfectly competitive. Only under this specific case are goods and services produced and sold at the lowest possible price. In the absence of perfect competition, however, resources are not allocated optimally, and consumers face higher prices due to firms exerting their market power. As a result, high levels of market power could have devastating consequences for welfare and inequality.

Why Are Startups Important for the Economy?
While this spike seems to be encouraging, some caution is required. An increase in EIN applications does not necessarily translate to a similar increase in employer startups. This is because entrepreneurs have additional incentives for obtaining an EIN. For example, EINs help entrepreneurs with building business credit history, which is important for obtaining private business loans, even for businesses not planning to hire any workers.
Can an Individual Large Firm Impact the U.S. Business Cycle?
Recent research has emphasized the importance of a few large firms in driving overall economic fluctuations, a view known as the "granular hypothesis." I find that the granular hypothesis can explain about 15 percent of aggregate U.S. fluctuations, a smaller share than found in other research. Thus, the granular hypothesis plays a meaningful role for the U.S. economy, but there is still plenty of room for aggregate factors to be relevant. What drives business cycle fluctuations?

It has paralyzed countries, destroyed entire industries, and buried economies under crippling debt.
Efficacy of type-2 targeted biologics in patients with asthma and bronchiectasis
Although classically thought of as neutrophilic-predominant inflammation, emerging evidence suggests that the inflammation in bronchiectasis is heterogeneous with a subset of patients having an eosinophil-predominant type 2 inflammatory response. 2 Tsikrika S.
