Abstract Wind is a fundamental driver of land–atmosphere exchange, yet its role in ecosystem water use efficiency (WUE) remains unclear. Here using global eddy-covariance observations combined with Earth system model simulations, we show that WUE declines with increasing wind speed across most terrestrial ecosystems, driven primarily by wind-induced increases in evapotranspiration and secondarily by reductions in gross primary productivity.
