Menarche-a journey into womanhood: age at menarche and health-related outcomes in East Asians

Are there associations of age at menarche (AAM) with health-related outcomes in East Asians? AAM is associated with osteoporosis, Type 2 diabetes (T2D), glaucoma, and uterine fibroids, as demonstrated through observational studies, polygenic risk scores, genetic correlations, and Mendelian randomization (MR), with additional findings indicating a causal effect of BMI and T2D on earlier AAM.

Introduction Dysmenorrhea, characterized by painful cramps of the uterus during menstruation, affects 45–95% of menstruating women. Dysmenorrhea is the leading morbidity among gynecological disorders and the leading cause of pelvic pain (1), thus representing the greatest burden for menstruating women (2, 3). Moreover, dysmenorrhea is related to negative performance in school and social and sports activities as well as short-term school absenteeism among adolescents (4).
